Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game. Fourth Adventure. Journey to Rivendell

Mulligan will follow along with the Elves to cut off the bandits.

I think capturing some of them with Sleep/Entangle is a good idea, but if they do scarper we may find ourselves having to use more force than they would like.

Gwaelur paces back and forth wracked with indecision. He does not want to abandon the Dwarves to fight off possible attackers by themselves. If any of them got hurt while he was off with the rest of the party he would never forgive himself. On the other hand, he does not want to leave his friends in the party to do battle by themselves. These things have a habbit of being bigger deals than they seem to be at first glance.

What to do?

So, is the plan something like:

  • leave the prisoner with the dwarves
  • Hobbits and elves move up to observe the current situation
  • Deor and Ghan follow some distance behind with guards (dogs for sure, possibly other PCs)
  • Deor and Ghan web, sleep, and entangle (we could also maybe use some light for missle fire) while the elves and Hobbits go after the remaining foes.

I am all in favour of our taking prisoners if possible. We will meet deadly force with deadly force, but I am reluctant to begin it based on only a suspicion.

If possible, as I can outrun most bandits in this kind of country assuming that they’re more encumbered than me and can’t see as well as I can, I want to get in front of them and try to deceive them into thinking they’re surrounded. A few cries of “Aim at the leaders!” and some rapid shooting (not at anyone in particular - just so that they can hear the near misses) might do it. (And intersperse the actual shots with some rapid twanging of the bowstring so that hopefully it sounds like several elven archers instead of one.)

“By all means,” cries Thoroncir. “Let us be off!”

Lets see if I understand this correctly. First goes Brownie then the Elves with a Hawk following each. Next up the Hobbits and Mulligan will use her injections to sleep or paralyze?

Then once the Elves and Hobbits are ahead of the humans, Ghân, Deor and Renee escorted by Thoroncir and the Canines will come up behind the potential brigands and subdue with Sleep, Entangle and Song and maybe some Webs.

Gwaelur needs to decide to stay or go as an escort. (go, just go, keep the party together)

Someone will then demand their surrender and if that does not work the Elves will attempt to simulate a troop of elven archers that miss a lot.

Is that the plan?

Alright, go it is. I will help with escorting Renee.

I sense a contradiction in terms here…

Me too

That sounds marvelously chaotic. Let’s try it!

Elfstan will stick with Mulligan since he doesn’t have much for non-lethal attacks. If things turn bloody (which is almost certain), he will use his sling if lighting conditions and proximity of the enemy allows it. If it comes to close combat he will use Sting and look for exposed backs. If he and Mulligan end up deep in combat, he will try to get back to back with her for better defense.

If we get into deep combat

Err, I will be using the injection dagger, if I can get close enough without being noticed. Paralysis usage methinks.

Otherwise a sling if they seem more than ready.

Oh and if I get into deep combat, I will be running for someone who is more capable than me leading the enemy away.

Elfstan, you may be a great hobbit wielding a fantastic blade, but a warrior you are not. Disgression is most definitely the better part of valour.

You might try the Sleep doses instead- we might get a situational bonus if either of us gets a marginal roll and both of us hit.

That’s why the sling was my first choice. I was just trying to cover some bases for when What Exit does his thing. This encounter seems like it has the potential for us to get separated from the tanks. If through misfortune we end up with foes around us, I would rather fight than expose my back. I guess it does depend on the number of foes and how soon we can expect help though. Give me a head start and as shown with the very first orcs we met together, I don’t mind running for help! A smoke bomb from you would hopefully give us a head start!

One adjustment:

Brownie will keep flying between Ghân and the alleged brigands, reporting each time (and staying out of missile range)

A troop of Elven archers who are mercifully making their intended victims aware of the hopelessness of their condition by firing a few warning shots…

OK, I will update in a few hours.

Excellent!

And again, I’m ready and willing to use this nice new trumpet of mine to enhance the appearance of a cunning ambush.

Haro son of Tamin says he will blow a blast on his own horn if help is needed by them.

Brownie races back to the brigands.

The Elves and Hawks head out swiftly and quietly.

The Hobbits follow at a job but 90’ behind.

All 3 spellscasters follow escorted by Thoroncir and Gwaelur and Fang and Anca of course.

The Brigands are only about 1500’ away in the cold camp and are rapidly breaking camp as quickly and quietly as possible. The Elves go around to the far side. They count only 12 men. Gil-Gandel signals this to Folca and thusly Deor.

Brownie has rushed back to Ghân alerting him that one man has moved south east.

A very basic map.

Ghân aims an Entangle to the far western side of the camp. Deor sleeps 9 of them. one remains nearer to the party on the Eastern side and 2 are apparently entangled and struggling feebly.

Sir Thoroncir will approach the brigands’ camp more closely with those whom he is escorting. When he can fully see the situation, he shouts, “Yield in the name of the King!” If any resist, he will move in with his longsword and shield, ready for action.

He also suggests that Ghan sic his dogs on the brigand heading southeast, to stop and restrain, not to kill.

Nice map!

Thanks What?, your map is really handy.

Seeing that the bandits have apparently been arrested without incident Miron subtly relaxes, managing not to convey his slight disappointment at the lost chance to put on a two-elf FX show for the benefit of any remaining bandits.

“They are presumably yet unaware that we two are out here,” he whispers to Gil, “So might I suggest that we keep it that way, at least until we are completely sure that we’ve captured everyone from this bunch?”
