Mike Tyson to fight YouTuber Jake Paul this July. Yeah, you read that correctly

If he’s training regularly his best bet would be something like a rope-a-dope to get Paul to put himself in range. I don’t know if Tyson can do that, his boxing style was consistent through his career. While Paul can be well prepared to face Tyson in his traditional style he is not very experienced and won’t do as well against anything new Tyson can show him.

All in all I expect Paul to run and clinch, and nothing much happening unless one of them gets too tired to defend themselves.

Clinching will get him killed. Tyson still looks very strong and has quick hands. Getting close will be bad news. I’ve seen him knock people out with body shots. Come in for the clinch and he’ll hit you with those short powerful hooks to the ribs. I doubt Paul has ever encountered anything like that. If he’s not successful at clinching he’ll get a jaw full of uppercut.

That’s of course if either are really interested in winning and not just dancing around for a paycheck.

I think the thread is way, way overestimating Paul’s chances.

Paul has legitimately dedicated himself to training and learning how to fight and he’s actually won some boxing matches, but he’s proposing to fight one of the greatest boxers who ever lived, and having watched him fight, I do not think he has the defensive skills necessary to avoid being clocked. He lets his left hand drop way too much. His thing is to come forward with one or two jabs out of his right, and he’s just completely defenseless. He is very, very slow by the standards of actual elite boxers. This is what Tyson spent his career punishing, and I’ve seen videos of him training and he’s still AMAZINGLY fast. If this fight is for real and Tyson is actually trying, Paul had better really be working on changing the way he defends himself or he’s going to he on his back in less than two minutes.

Paul is strong but he’s winning fights against substandard boxers and ex-MMA guys. He is not fighting real contenders. Tyson can easily knock him out in the first round.

I feel like I have seen this fight before…

He’s pretty good at solving Mysteries. Well, with a little help.

20 years ago I would have agreed with you. And I still wouldn’t want to take a Tyson punch today, but he his 58, that is ancient in the boxing world. If Paul can avoid getting KO’d for the first 2 minutes, Tyson will be gassed and the fights get equal, tilting towards youth every second after that.

Yes, if Paul avoids the right hand for two rounds. I don’t think he is capable of it.

LOL, I love that movie and it’s eerie how similar it is to what’s happening in real life with this match.

Mike may not be in his prime, but his “Not in my prime” is not our “Not in my prime”

He doesn’t have the raw physical power anymore, but he still seems to have fast hands.

It reminds me initially of Brian Scalabrine. He’s the former NBA backup (career 3pts per game) who (famously?) stated to fans who thought they could play better than him “I’m closer to LeBron than you are to me” and then proved it by absolutely trouncing a few non-NBA challengers on a TV show.

Competing against a world class athlete in their sport is a dangerous thing to contemplate.

Truth. Joan Benoit Samuelson, the winner of the first ever Olympic women’s marathon, just ran 3:38:37 at the Tokyo Marathon. At 66. That’s more than 10 minutes faster than my PR, achieved when I was two decades younger.

We don’t know much about this fight, or how these two would stack up against each other. However, out of the possibilities for this fight, assuming anything like a legitimate boxing match occurs, Jake Paul somehow winning is the most interesting to consider. But it’s all speculation for now,

Simpsons did it.

But Pigeon is dead, so he’s got to depend on Deezy.

Poster fits post
(My marathon time is infinite, I’m more a bicyclist and even there I’m not fast – though I can do 100+km rides)

Weight matters a lot. Tyson is 20lbs heavier than Paul, or at leadt was as of their last weigh-ins. I had forgotten that Tyson had a professional fight as recently as 2020 when he fought Roy Jones, Jr. Interestingly, Jake Paul was on the undercard for that fight.

I’m not sure I’d bet on Tyson. He’s 30 years older, and his last fight was a draw. Jake Paul has a 9-1 record, but I wouldn’t say all his opponents were top quality…

Still, the sports books are favoring Paul. He’s at -225 or so, with Tyson at +170.

It will certainly be interesting.

I just watched it on Youtube. That was fun. He won 11-0, 11-0, and 11-3 against the three of them.

Yeah - I’ve had the opportunity to golf and play softball with some minor league and sub Korn-Ferry tour players. It is kinda mind-boggling how good those guys are, yet they have no qualms about saying why they are nowhere near good enough to make the majors.

And I used to do a ton of martial arts, including some local competitive fighting. I could hold my own at that VERY modest level. But there were fighters in my gym, not to mention my instructor, who would be playing with me like a cat with a mouse. And my instructor would speak the same way about HIS instructors.

I was in the best shape of my life at age 40. Never felt old until I was 50. Now, at 63, I feel like I got hit by a truck.

Tyson wasn’t just good - he was the best. Sure, at 57, he has no business competing at the top level. But his talent was so high, that he could lose quite a bit of strength, stamina, and speed - and still outclass most amateurs/semi pros.

I dunno - maybe this guy could cover up and dance long enough for Mike to get winded. But if I were putting down money, I think I’d place it on Mike ending it in the first couple. How well can this guy take a punch? How many rounds is it set to go?

If you think Tyson will win, you could make a lot of money. The sports books are favoring Paul by a fair bit. The lines have gotten closer over time, but a while ago Tyson was +300 and Paul was -220. Now I think it’s something like +230, -170. Still, Paul is the bookies’ favorite. Not knowing much about the current state of either fighter, I’d go with the bookies. But if you know different, there’s an opportunity.
