Mike Tyson to fight YouTuber Jake Paul this July. Yeah, you read that correctly

Naw - I surely don’t KNOW different! And it’s been a LONG TIME since I put any $ down on sports. Likely swayed by my being in such awe of the guy back in the day.

Just looked - headgear and oversized gloves. Both in Paul’s favor.

A LOT of it is going to turn on Paul’s ability to take a punch.

Looked further - watched his fight against Silva (MAN, he was an amazing force in his MMA prime!) Paul is not much of a boxer. If Tyson has deteriorated so far that he is not able to handle him readily, it will be quite sad to watch.

I have a question about Mike Tyson and it somewhat relates since we all agree these Paul guys are losers.

Isn’t Tyson a rapist? I thought he went to prison for that. How did he get accepted so well back into society while people like Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein obviously will not be taken back.

Was his situation different? Are we just overlooking that with him for some reason?

For the same reason Roman Polanski is still a celebrated director - people just didn’t care as much about such things in the '80s, I guess.

First, he was found guilty of 1 rape, not a serial rapist like those guys. Tyson’s life was spread open by the media and he looked like a dumbass who had been used by other to enrich themselves at his expense. His rape conviction was also described as ‘railroading a guilty man’. People didn’t think he was well represented and possibly could have been acquitted or pled the case down, although not many thought he didn’t do it, he did appear once again to be victimized by others. After serving his time he was less than an ideal citizen but openly admitted to his mistakes and took responsibility for them.

I’m not trying to apologize for him, just pointing out factors that allowed him to put the incident behind him.

I’m not going to hijack the thread with a different discussion but I thought this was an interesting read.

It is a good read. I’m not sure what to really think about him, to be honest.

I know they’re just commercials but here’s another recent one:

https://old.reddit.com/r/sports/comments/1bgfhn0/mike_tyson_who_turns_58_in_june_training_for_his/

Is part of it how he was perceived - as a near feral animal and a thug, whose professional success was in defeating his opponents so soundly that many questioned when he would kill someone in the ring. Then there was the inexplicable business with Robin Givens, which made many question whether he was mentally deficient.

So who was really surprised that he assaulted a woman? And after his sentence, how has he been “accepted so well back”? As a side show act?

I think such social factors might explain how wealthy, educated, powerful men like Weinstein and Cosby are perceived differently.

Gotta admit, that is one of the most un-Law Review like articles I’ve ever seen in a Law Review. Generally you expect cites from sources other than a barbershop bull session. From my alma mater no less!

I would bet on him (if I bet)

And as sane as he seems now, I bet his Fucking Crazy would come out in the ring pretty damn quick. He’s a Dangerous Human Being.

This needed adding

I’m not so sure any of the blathering on about Mike Tyson’s history “needed adding,” but to the extent that it’s relevant, I’ve learned this is to be a “no head-shots” exhibition type game, with training gear worn by both the boxer and this chooch youtube kid.

IOW, it’s going to be a tame little show, or Iron Mike is going to unleash his fury and get rid of this fashion kid within a few seconds. AIUI, he’d thereby forfeit his contract, and maybe left open and looking for a civil lawsuit.

But, I don’t think the beast is coming out of the cage: a few jabs, and Mike’s been working cardio, so he’ll not be winded after a few like some fat-ass blob. Certainly enough to keep dodging this “person” (or “boxer” or “celubutard”) for eight rounds or whatever.

End up as a draw. There’s no skin in the game. So Jake Lloyd or whatever child beats an old dude who used to be pretty good? Or Iron Mike closes some TV dude’s mouth with a few body blows and the kid goes down in round two, given the limitations of the format.

Question from a boxing non-fan: Is there any concern about wagering on this fight because its outcome could easily be fixed?

Tyson has absolutely nothing to gain for this fight other than a quick paycheck thanks to idiot dudebros. Paul, meanwhile seems completely tapped into said dudebro/Roganites/steroidville culture and inexplicably seems to continue to generate press and clicks despite offering nothing redeeming whatsoever. Why would anyone trust this fight os on the up and up?

Not sure why I didn’t think of this before, but back in the day, I had the pleasure of (very occasionally) training with some of Bruce Lee’s original students - Dan Inosanto, Jesse Glover, and James DeMille. I imagine each of them was in their late 50s early 60s when I encountered them. I was in. my late 30s, and in the best shape of my life. Pretty decent at a local club level.

There is ZERO doubt in my mind that each of them would have quickly demolished me if we went at it, whether striking, grappling, or weapons. I suspect it is a combination of technique honed over decades, and huge experience as to the tendencies of less accomplished practitioners. Not sure how directly relevant that is. Continually practicing/teaching martial arts for decades is not the same as being a full contact gladiator - with lengthy breaks over time. Just tossing it out there.

That’s pretty funny.

I don’t know…I’m just a casual boxing fan, without any actual experience in any kind of pugilism, except just “mixing it up” a bit with a few neighbors for fun (no head shots, just sparring without any gear, working on fundamentals, trying a few moves, may have been some drinking involved!).

I wouldn’t put it past the kid…what is his thing, like selling energy drinks or something? But Iron Mike…he’s had a long history of being pretty unpredictable in the ring (ear?)…TBH, just off the cuff, I doubt he has that kind of organized long view of doing something like “in the fifth round, my ass goes down!”

No, I have no idea, but it seems that level of planning wouldn’t occur to Tyson. Not saying he’s too dumb to figure it out…it takes some amount of intelligence to box at a high level…just doesn’t seem like the kind of long view and subterfuge is compatible with his approach in the ring.

Now, if that’s true, then one might well question if he’s able to control his fury in the ring, as well.

I agree there should be a great deal of skepticism about the terms and conditions and motivations for this “fight,” but there’s probably not a “the fix is in!” except that it’s a sort of dog-pony show in the pursuit of lucre. But, that’s normal for any fight, really.

At his age, Tyson could never beat a top heavyweight boxing contender, but if he takes the fight seriously and trains like he did in his prime (not a quick and easy money grab), I don’t think Paul stands a chance. Tyson just needs to connect with his signature right uppercut in the first couple rounds.

Please do not use “retard” or derivations thereof to refer to a person, as it’s considered demeaning.

My mistake, clearly. Won’t happen again. I do understand and am on-board with the message 100%.

Well, that remains to be seen if the contract even allows Mike to go for a KO by way of contact with the head. I’m not sure.

Casual inspection of the terms of the fight seems to suggest that Mike’s going to be limited to body blows…but that’s not nothing! He gets in close and repeatedly pummels this Paul energy drink kid to the chest and gut…seems like game over to me.

Unless the kid can dodge and keep out of reach. But Mike’s whole career, given his limitations in reach, has been built around coming in close and staying there, and bringing the pain. That may be a classic case of experience: decades of practice doing exactly that.

Just random observation, from one who really doesn’t know. Then again, nobody really knows!
