Do you drink milk all by itself? With meals only? Is milk just for cooking?
What kind of milk to you buy? Do you buy different milk for cooking than you do for drinking? Do you have your own cows? Do your kids drink the same milk you do? Do you… drink right out of the carton?
Have I left anything out?
Me? I buy 2%, used for both cooking and drinking and, yes, I have been known to drink milk all by itself (not right out of the carton though). Alex (son, 2 years old) drinks 2%, too, but only with breakfast and dinner. Supper? Um, the last meal of the day. Sometimes he’ll have milk with his snacks, but that depends on what his snacks are.
I’ve never tried soy milk. I don’t believe I’ve ever had fresh-from-the-farm milk. We went through a poor phase when I was a kid and I remember having both mix-it-yourself powder and milk that came in bags (wtf?).
So, yeah. Tell me all about your milk consumption.
Skim milk for me, as often as possible. Besides water it’s pretty much all I drink.
Though for some reason, when I’m sick, milk ends up tasting terrible. I’ve talked with others and they’ve never experienced this; I’ve always assumed it was natural. How I know I’m sick (besides various other symptoms of course) is when milk suddenly tastes terrible to me. But apparently it tastes fine for others. I don’t know.
I generally try to go for 1% in the US; in Japan water the low fat is (I think it is usually about 1.5%.)
An interesting thing I’ve noticed is that in the US, I have to stay to the same brand or else it takes bad–though over time if I keep drinking it I will become accustomed to the new stuff. In Japan this doesn’t happen and I can drink any brand of milk and think it tastes perfectly tasty. Current thinking is that–since the expiration dates are significantly lower here–Japan uses less preservatives so all the milk tastes more like it did straight out of the cow, while the US ones change flavor based on the mixture of stuff they added.
NOt entirely sure waht 2% or 1% is (other than the amount of fat in the milk) cos we don’t have those classifications in the UK. I drink semi-skimmed. A lot. Skimmed milk is just water with a little milk dropped into it by accident - eurgh. And full-fat milk is pretty gross too - not a big fan of cream so that might explain it!
I have had fresh farm milk - I know lots of people evangelise about it - but I thought it was pretty foul. It was warm for a start - straight from the cow! - and very thick.
Anyway, best way to drink it - Milk Chocolate Hob Nobs dunked in! Yay!
Big milk drinkers in my house. I buy two gallons at a time, some times three if I’m completely out. I usually buy 2% for my husband and the kids. If we get overloaded at work (preschool), the director will give some of us a gallon to take home (meaning whoever’s there on Friday afternoons), but that’s 1% and my husband doesn’t like it. I’ll drink it, and the kids will use it on cereal, but Mr. Biblio swears he can tell the difference.
I buy half & half for my coffee and tea. I also will drink milk all by itself - why would that be strange? I love milk.
I often joke that we just need a cow, we drink so much.
I used to drink a lot. I went throguh almost a gallon a week at one point, and it’s just me living here! I cut back though and am down to half a gallon a week. I drink 2%, and use it for cooking, too. I usually don’t have just a glass of milk, it’s almost always if I’m eating something with it. Certain things NEED milk, like a PB&J sandwich, or a piece of cake.
Me too! Everyone thinks I’m crazy when I tell them this!
We just got a fantastic milk - 2% or thereabouts, non-homogenized and Vat Pasteurized, and darnit, I actually taste the difference! It’s like nectar. But it seems strange to have to shake milk before pouring. The Kid will still sometimes have milk with a meal, but it’s usually for cereal and cookies or brownies.
We all drink the same milk except for the Baby, who only drinks Mommy’s milk. I’ve tried it, and it’s like a melted milkshake - it’s so sweet and thick! Weird.
I usually use the drinking milk for cooking, unless I’m indulging and making something like biscuits and gravy - then I’ll use half and half, or, for company, heavy whipping cream!
I just switched to Skim milk now that I’m of the “fat blood” persuasion. I didn’t think I’d be able to handle it, having been a 2% girl most of my adult life, but I think I’m adjusted to it.
I drink about a 1/2 gallon a week by myself. Mr. Kalhoun used to drink about a gallon every two days or so by himself, but he OD’d and now he’s off it completely.
I’m drinking more now that they’re saying its good for the waistline.
I don’t drink much milk now, but as a kid, and especially as a teenager, I drank quite a bit. I’d drink a gallon a week of whole milk as a teenager. I’m glad now that I did, seeing as how calcium is so important for good bones when you are growing.
My husband hates everything but skim milk (plus I’m too old and get fat too easily to drink anything else now) so that’s what we have in the house. I use it for cooking and cereal eating and that’s about it. I also keep a small container of half and half for my coffee.
We get our milk from a local dairy, so it comes in glass bottles that I return for a deposit.
If you find yourself with just skim milk and half and half, mixing them does not result in lowfat milk (or if it does, I had the wrong proportions.) :smack:
Alas, milk is just another of the things I have to watch my consumption of (along with sugar, tomatos, potatos and lettuce), however before my fall from grace, I always got skim milk (still do for the family) and would occasionally drink it by itself.
I never eat cereal (cereal falls into two categories, overly sweet or utterly tasteless) but would usually drink milk with peanut butter sandwhiches. Occasionally use it for cooking, but not often.
I never drank a ton of milk as a kid, mainly on my cereal or with Ovaltine mixed in – and NEVER with dinner (ew). As a teen I noticed it was making me rather ill everytime I drank it… lactose intolerance. Anything more than 1/4 cup and I’d be running to the bathroom. So, if I had cereal I would eat it dry or just barely dampened with milk. I don’t care for the taste of soy milk or the texture of rice milk… EdenBlend is ok but mostly I couldn’t be bothered finding a replacement for milk. It wasn’t that important to me.
The years passed and I continued to avoid plain milk, although I was fine with milk products that were cooked or cultured. A few years ago I read that lactose intolerance can be “challenged” with some degree of sucess, and began gingerly trying it again (lately I have a thing for strawberry milk you see). Now I can drink up to 1/2 cup with no ill effect.
But a quart still goes bad in my house before I have the chance to use it up.
I got in trouble last week. My wife caught my five year old drinking the 1% straight from the jug. His response? “But daddy does it!” Yeah. Daddy did it. But never when mommy was looking!
Do you drink milk all by itself? Yes. That’s my “in a hurry” breakfast, a biiiiig glass of milk.
With meals only? No, I’ll take a drink when I’m hungry but don’t feel like making a snack.
Is milk just for cooking? Heck no!
What kind of milk to you buy? 1% Anderson Erickson or Swiss Valley. I find the cheeper store brands tend more often to get a weird grainy taste–like the aftertaste of vodka. I drank a little too much vodka one night and can’t stand the taste, so I guess it transfered over to milk. If I get an off gallon I need to mix in chocolate to stand drinking it.
Do you buy different milk for cooking than you do for drinking? Nope.
Do you have your own cows? No, three cats, a dog and a fish tank are enough.
Do your kids drink the same milk you do? Don’t have any, but I think when we get some we will go back to 2%. We’re only on 1% 'cause we got a little fat lately.
Do you… drink right out of the carton? Yeah. It’s just me and Bird Man, and we swap spit all the time. We also drink straight out of the orange juice carton, and eat olives right out of the jar.
Me too, I don’t know, and me too. I know people who never drink milk at all and my parents (my whole family, probably) only drink milk when they’re eating something, so I’m used to little comments and things about drinking milk by itself.
I drink skim milk, usually a glass a day with dinner, although I’ll have it by itself occasionally. That’s also what I use on cereal, on the infrequent occasions I eat cereal. I grew up drinking skim – actually, the first milk I remember drinking was Sanalac powdered milk – so to me, anything with more fat just tastes gross. I’d literally have to choke down a glass of 2% or whole milk.
My wife’s drinking 2% these days because she’s pregnant and can use the calories. She drinks at least a glass a day, usually two or more. She’s a milk fiend.
For cooking, I use her 2% milk or buy smaller cartons to use in recipes. I’ve made stuff like Kraft Mac & Cheese with skim milk and it’s fine – not as good as 2%, but fine – but I wouldn’t substitute skim for higher-fat milk in real recipes.
