Misspellings in thread titles: carelessness

(Mild ranting).

This recent thread title:

“i wnat to buy a new laptop”

So this guy wants to spend a few hundred bucks for a new laptop and he can’t even take a second to read over that short title. It’s just carelessness. I think he doesn’t deserve any help from other dopers.

I’m tolerant with typos and misspellings in text. Not everybody is expected to master the language perfectly, but I don’t feel like opening threads containing such heedless misspellings in titles.

…unless I expect some witty answers as in this other current thread:

“Yahoo declared Obama the winer!” (go to “Elections” thread jump)
(I tried to link the thread but failed)

Writing an OP in the Pit without being able to post a URL: Fail.

Also: How did I know this would be about either etv78 or ralphc124?

Not on the Straight Dope, but I recently saw someone misspell “dog” on her blog.

Did she spell it Doug?

It’s unfortunate that you are forced to open threads with misspelled words in the title.

What a lame pitting. The only way this stays in the pit is if the outrage turns against the OP.

Misspellings in titles don’t generally bother me, except when they’re in the keywords that identify the subject. Because if the thread is interesting and useful, I might never be able to find it again by searching.

Also, the title is not editable unless you ask a Mod to change it for you. I doubt I would go to the trouble if all I did was make a blatant typo.

Was it this?

I laughed out loud. Part of me wants to assume it was purposeful. Or perhaps it’s a well-done photoshop.

Just for this, I’ll jump in and say, “I agree with the OP 100% and may the thread lead a long and fruitful life.”

That would be ralph124c, and you damned sure better remember it if you put his name in a thread title.

Admit it. How many times did you reread the thread title for spelling errors before you clicked “Submit”?

Some people got no self-respect.

I would respond, but I know doing so would doom me to misspelling the title of my next thread.

I reread the title a couple of times… hoping against hope… but no, it was spelled correctly. Broke my heart.

This!

Well… shit happens.

My spellchecker will not check certain fields on the web, including the thread title box.

And you need a spellchecker to clue you in that ‘wnat’ is spelled wrong?
