MLB 2021 Playoffs

We begin tonight with Yanks at Red Sox. (8pm ET on ESPN) The good news for all those that hate both these teams is one of their seasons end tonight.

Myself, Go Yanks.

Winner plays Tampa. (Thursday FS1, 8pm ET)
White Sox play Astros. (Thursday FS1, 4pm ET)

National League
St Louis @ LA. (Wednesday 8pm ET on ESPN)

Friday:
White Sox v. Astros, Game 2 (MLBN, 2 pm ET)
Braves v. Brewers, Game 1 (TBS, 4:30 pm ET)
Winner v. Rays, Game 2 (FS1, 7 pm ET)
Winner v. Giants, Game 1 (TBS, 9:30 pm ET)

I’m going to grudgingly root for the Red Sox, simply because the Commonwealth of Massachusetts paid my salary at a time I really needed a job.

I’ll return to the constant complaint of any league not the NFL - I wish they’d reseed after each round. It’s a bummer that the Giants and Dodgers, the two best records in MLB, will likely meet in the Division series. That game would be better as a NL championship than Division.

So go Giants, Rays, White Sox, and Brewers!

Here’s the order in which I’ll be rooting during the playoffs:

  1. Brewers
  2. Rays
  3. Braves
  4. Red Sox
  5. Dodgers
  6. Astros
  7. White Sox
  8. Giants
  9. The heat death of the universe
  10. Cardinals
  11. Yankees

I was about to ask whether the Red Sox were the equivalent of the heat death of the universe, but I see you’ve fixed that.

I’m a die hard Red Sox fan, but if they don’t make it I’ll root for the White Sox from the AL
In the NL I’ll root for the Brewers, and then my Dad’s old team, the Giants.

Here are the most recent championships by each postseason team:

2020 Dodgers*
2018 Red Sox
2017 Astros
2014 Giants
2011 Cardinals
2009 Yankees
2005 White Sox
1995 Braves
1993 Blue Jays
(never) Brewers

  • — *only 60 games in a covid season that doesn’t really count

I’m only listing each team’s most recent championship.

You’re missing the Rays, perhaps accidentally switching them with the Blue Jays. The Rays have never won it all.

You can call them Ray, or you can call them Jay…

Yes! Rays, not Jays!

Of course it counts. It was a weird season, and we’ll hopefully never see anything like it again. But it was a complete season with a post-season that was actually more extensive than any other we’ve seen. It will be a century before anyone will see anything with the year “2020” on it and not be aware of the circumstances surrounding it.

You’re talking to a Giants fan. So, to me it doesn’t count.

Okay lemme fix this list.

Here are the most recent championships by each postseason team:

2020 Dodgers*
2018 Red Sox
2017 Astros
2014 Giants
2011 Cardinals
2009 Yankees
2005 White Sox
1995 Braves
(never) Rays; went twice
(never) Brewers; went once

  • — *only 60 games in a covid season that still doesn’t count

I’m only listing each team’s most recent championship.

The Rays lost the World Series in 2020 (Dodgers) and 2008 (Phillies).
The Brewers lost the World Series in 1982 (Cardinals).

Here’s the order of who I’m rooting for, mostly for sentimental reasons:

  1. Giants — Go Giants!!!
  2. Astros, for Dusty
  3. Brewers, because they’ve never won it all
  4. Rays, because they’ve never won it all, but Miller Park is sooo much nicer than The Trop
  5. White Sox
  6. Red Sox
  7. Cardinals
  8. Braves
  9. Yankees
  10. Dodgers

The Cheatstro’s should still be on probation.

Alex Rodriguez: “It’s gonna be a different day here tonight.”

One thing that makes baseball different from any other team sport that I can think of is the unique stadium layouts. Stantons single in the first would have been a HR anywhere else and would have changed the tone of the game.

On one hand, you can’t blame Stanton for thinking the ball was gone. On the other, it’s a freaking do or die game, if he had ran from the start it’s a double. You can’t give bases away.

This also has a strange tendency to play out a lot when chasing balls into foul territory.

I couldnt agree more.

Agreed. Steve Bartman anyone?
