Modern Family 9/25/13

Not varsity, no. Freshman.

I wouldn’t say I was shocked. That’s the sort of stereotype humor Modern Family occasionally goes for. And, it never fails to disappoint me. I think Modern Family is one of the funniest shows on tv, so I know the writers are better than that. I really dislike when they stoop to that sort of easy, not especially funny joke.

I thought both episodes were really funny. And, Luke did look noticeably different this year. From the haircut, to his height.

Agreed; and I feel the exact same way about shows that do that with straight couples. That being said I am looking forward to seeing the over-the-top wedding Cam plans.

Right, Cam will also be a PE teacher, The boys are happy they get a coach who actually knows what he’s talking about. AP stands for Advanced Placement; there college-level classes that juniors & seniors take. Unlike regular classes the curriculum is standardized nationwide and students can earn college credit based on the results of their finals (which every student in the US takes at the exact same time). When I took them the finals were graded on a 5 point scale; 3 or higher was required for college credit. Also we actually owned our textbooks instead of borrowing them from the district like normal classes (you got a bill at the end of the year if you didn’t take the final).

I was kind of distracted during the episode where Phil and Claire were plotting some alone time. What was it Claire wanted to do without Phil?

She just wanted some alone time for herself so she called Phil’s father to lure him away. But Phil had also called Claire’s mother for the same reason.

I was thinking about this since it seemed a little bit out of the usual m.o. on this show, and I think it might have been a bit of a poke at people who do respond like that to the idea of gay marriage, comparing them to a baby. Or I’m just reading too much into a stupid running joke.

Ah, that’s what was going on with the cellphone - I didn’t get that bit.

I started sobbing at the proposal. I got so overwhelmed thinking about all the people that could now get married, and not just them, that I lost it. Didn’t see that coming.

I liked both episodes overall and I’m happy now it’s in syndication on USA, although I can see tiring of it quickly, as it’s on 900 times a day or similar.

Me too. I am glad they had an episode where I dodn’t wonder why these two people were together.

There was an episode last season or the season before when she rammed her ride-in play car into something and one of them said something like, “Well, we did always know there’d be a chance that she would be a terrible driver.”

“Sometimes I don’t know if I love how much I fear Claire, or fear how much I love her.”

Followed by Claire reacting like it’s the most romantic thing he’s ever said.

I see a difference between the 2 lines, I think with the driving one it was obvious Mitch was riffing – telling a Dave Chappelle type joke. Maybe it was the same situation with the school, but it seemed more like he was serious and just making a racist comment. I could be way off.

So, the season finale will be the wedding.

How many weeks until the gay PE teacher is the A-story? I’d say at most two. Hopefully they’ll deal with it once, and then let it go.

I loved that! Hilarious!

I was slightly surprised by Claire in the second episode. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the show but I would not have expected her to be quite so insecure about relating to subordinates nor would I have expected her to think she could tell the IT guy he was going to be fired without planning for retribution.

I know, I know, there’s something wrong with me, but Claire’s bitchiness/control freakness just makes her more attractive to me.

Wasn’t one of the things Phil has saved from their dating days the “matchbook where you wrote down a fake phone number” ?

I forget the specifics, but the biggest laugh for me was when Phil was referring to a country that starts with ‘L’ - El Salvador.
mmm

Correct my memory, but had we seen the Dog Butler in Jay’s office before this episode?

(And that is not how you sex a turtle. In general, male turtles and tortoises have a concave plastron, while females’ are flat. You don’t need to probe its cloaca.)

Duly noted.

It floats. At one point it was in his attic.

It was nice seeing Cam and Mitchell as a loving couple for a change rather than just bickering punchlines.
