Modern Family, Jan. 11, 2012 - "Egg Drop"

I didn’t get the references to cutting grapes. Why was Jay so worked up about that? Who asked for cut grapes?

Phil: I’m not anymore.
Gloria: Don’t treat me like that!
Phil: I’m furious.

I kind of wanted them to kiss.

The grape thing was a bit of a delayed punchline. Gloria cuts up grapes for Manny. I actually rewound my DVR to see if I misunderstood Jay’s"tear through a grape" line correctly, thinking maybe it was a reference to a previous episode. Then, at the end of that scene, Gloria is seen getting ready to cut up some grapes for Manny.

Sometimes people (my wife, for one) cut individual grapes in half so children don’t choke on them if they just swallow them, rather than chew.

That’s fine for little kids, but older kids (say, four and older) should be able to, you know, chew their food.

I love when they make the ‘dumb kid’ a mastermind. I also loved Manny’s little speech about working with his hands.

Mitchell: Claire was like the son that Dad never had.

Mitchell: I threw a ball once, but Dad didn’t attend.

I got a kick out of Gloria screaming into the phone in Spanish. Basically, she did say what Manny told Jay - “Go kill yourself, I love you, etc.” But really it was more Yosemite Sam-type Spanish, with a lot of indecipherable ranting and grumbling thrown in.

Oh my God, I just got that upon reading your post.
mmm
ETA: Then there was Hailey’s line about Alex going through life ‘unmanned’.

I rewound my DVR quite a bit during that scene too. Still don’t remember a single line of dialogue.

There’s an inconsistency here with her attitude toward her family/loved ones from an earlier episode. She has criticized Jay for the way he and his brother talk to each other, as if they are enemies; Jay explained that’s just the way they are with each other. I remember her saying something along the lines of “you’re supposed to be nice to your loved ones”, or that sort of thing. And now she’s the one screaming shit into the phone to her family.

Harrumph.

Yup, that’s what I was thinking – inconsistent!

This is a real thing?

:smack::smack::smack::smack::smack::smack::smack::smack:

It’s really amazing how any of us lived to adulthood, what with dangers like uncut grapes lurking around every corner.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has, in recent years, been going on about food-related choking hazards. Don’t know how much grape-worry predates that.

A skeptical view of their data in raising the alarm.

I love this line; it’s amazing how much can be communicated in nine words.

The grape thing- when our kids were toddlers, we learned that cutting grapes was preferable because they’re just about the size of the windpipe, smooth and slippery, and can easily be swallowed whole by a toddler and get stuck in the throat. It’s another one of those things that as parents you start out rolling your eyes about, then consider the consequences, and suddenly decide to start cutting the damn things.

I never cut my kid’s grapes. They survived. My youngest, however, almost didn’t survive the dry roast beef. I had to do the Heimlich on her. Seriously. She’s 17 now (happened about 10 years ago) and I still tell her to chew her meat.

I liked this episode. Completely disagree with the poster who kind of wished they had kissed. That would have taken both characters down several notches in my view.

I don’t mind it when sitcom characters go down … notches. They’re fictional.

I like that Phil thought that a mouse pad was a good prize. Not only are mouse pads now useless but even when they were in use, if they had a company logo on them they were free.

They already kissed at the basketball game last season. It’ll clearly never happen again.
