Molly Ivins Is Very Sick

How can Texas lose both Ann Richards and Molly Ivins and still have any balls left?

Apparently (from what I’ve read) Ivins has a rare type of breast cancer, Inflammatory Breast Cancer, so I just thought I’d mention in the name of awareness that IBC can be a sneaky disease. Unlike the more common other form of breast cancer, it often doesn’t show up on mammograms or with an obvious palpable lump. Instead, it often seems like an infection at first, and by the time many women are diagnosed it’s already terminal. For this reason, it’s important to take any changes to the breast or nipple seriously even if there’s no apparent lump.
There’s a list of symptoms for IBC here if anyone is interested: IBC Symptoms and Diagnosis – IBC Research Foundation

Damn Damn and Damn again. I didn’t know. Molly Ivins is the epitome of a well-honed firebrand gal. Let’s have best hopes and best thoughts that she pulls through this.

She knew the bullshit that goes on in Texas politics and wrote about it from the inside. Texas is the maxing out of dirty politics and Bush was steeped in it. She has a sense of humor and sees the irony.

That is putting it mildly.

There is at least one thing that puts Ms. Ivins lightyears ahead of our current Chimp-in-Chief[sup]TM[/sup]: She can admit when she is wrong! I’ve heard her do it, even. It was on NPR when she was discussing the CiC. She said that when he was the governeratorer* of Texas she thought that he at least got the importance of education with his NCLB act for Texas. She later found out that the “successes” of the program were due to schools manipulating how the tests were administered and who took them and freely admitted this. IIRC, she blamed herself for taking the results at face value and not digging deeper to find out what was really going on.

Hang on, Molly, at least until April of 2009, so she can die knowing that America’s no longer on the same deranged path that we’re on now.

*Deliberate attempt at a “Bushism” and not a typo caused by imbibing too much cheap scotch.

As you might imagine, I’ve been no fan of Molly Ivins. But I wish sickness and pain on no one for their politics and I’m saddened that this situation has come to pass. My condolences to you luci, and to you ETF and Zoe, and to everyone else who is saddened by the news of her illness. Here’s hoping that a miracle occurs and she pulls through.

I have to say, that’s the classiest thing I’ve seen you do, SA, and that puts you far ahead of many people who claim to share the same political views as you.

This is truly sad news.

In his defense, SA also made a great post after the last election congratulating the Dem’s on their victory.

Godfuckindammittohell. And back. Turnabout and take it to hell again.
.

The article linked in the OP says this is her third bout with cancer. IOW, she’d bounced back twice before. I have a friend in his 70s who’s been through cancer that many times – if you listen to the doctors, he died 15 years ago. But he’s still plodding along.

Just sayin’, there’s hope.

Damn, that is terrible news. Molly Ivins single-handedly raised this northerner’s opinion of Texas. Here’s hoping she winds up with a great outcome, no matter what form that outcome might take.

Here’s some prayers headed her way.

:frowning:

Before the SDMB, before Drudge, before the Internets came to be, Molly’s books were there. Even when I disagree, I love her style. I want to be her when I write, but obviously fall far, far short.

Hang in there, gal, if there’s any chance. We all thought you’d licked this thing.

Can’t say I followed her writing on a regular basis, but anyone who can make me laugh out loud deserves credit and anyone who can make me laugh out loud, and think, deserves recognition. I’ve read at least one of her books and who knows how many of her columns.
I’m hoping she beats this and comes back to entertain and educate us.
The very best to you Molly, whatever happens.
Here’s a link to her latest column: http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/news/columnists/molly_ivins/16453737.htm

I missed that one. Good on him for doing so.

Texas is a special place. (“Special” is a euphemism.) Molly Ivins has always supplied an equally special perspective on it. (In this case, “special” means honest, fearless and funny.) The current U.S. President has done his best to turn the whole country into Texas, which is really special of him; so we could use at least 50 columnists like Molly Ivins.

Molly Ivins has a long history with The Texas Observer–the journal for Texas Liberals. She was editor for a while, she’s part of the board & her columns still appear.

Worth a look: The Texas Observer: Investigating Texas Since 1954

Of course, all you Texas Liberals already subscribe. (I do.)

Aw goddamnitalltahell! :frowning: How sad. Here’s to hoping she can keep on fighting the “good fight”. We need more people like her, out there.

Damn it!

The universe is such an unfair place. This sucks unwashed, contagious AND infected llama ass.

What, both of them?
