Moms, apple pie and....bigotry?

One of these things is not like the other.

There’s a thread in Cafe Society about a million moms (or so they call themselves) blasting formerly sweet harmless little Miley Cyrus for sending “the wrong message to our children” and not understanding the Bible.

What did this young actress/singer say that was clearly so outrageous? Prepare to be shocked! (the following not for the faint of heart or ultra-right wing, and depending on your workplace, it could be NSFW)

“Everyone deserves to love and be loved and most importantly smile.”
“Jesus loves you…”
“Like I said everyone deserves to be happy.”
“God’s greatest commandment is to love.”
“I am a Christian and I love you… We are all God’s children.”

faint I can’t believe she would say these things! No wonder the religious right is so upset! No wonder a million moms (ok, a few dozen maybe) are worked up in a lather, boycotting Disney and all things Miley Cyrus! I mean, if I were a parent of young children who adored Miss Cyrus, I’d…well, I don’t know what I’d do. Shrug, maybe, or say “Way to go, Miley!” but then, that’s just me.

Of course, the whole ruckus is because Miley said these things about gay people, and according to the million moms (ok, a few dozen maybe), love, compassion and tolerance must be hated, scorned and not tolerated at all.

So why is that, anyway? There’s already a thread about Miley, so I more curious here regarding the mom’s point of view. I don’t get it. What kind of message is being sent to children that it’s ok to attack someone for saying that we are all God’s children? That we should love one another? That everyone deserves to be happy? What kind of whacked-out mindset thinks their children are better served by hate than by love?

I’m so confused. Just like, I’ll bet, those kids hearing a message of love from Miley and a message of hate from their parents. What must it be like to grow up in such a household?

Haven’t you already done this?

As I said, I’m curious about the moms/kids points of view, which goes beyond Miley and is not suitable for Cafe Society. For instance, I know there are people here who grew up in ultra-religious households. They would have an insight as to what the kids might be feeling and thinking. There are probably some “million moms” on the Dope, though I wouldn’t expect them to post regarding how they reconcile a message of love vs. a message of hate, though that would be interesting.

Anyway, they’re two different threads, in my mind anyway, but the Miley aspect is the connecting entity, so maybe others will see it differently, as I guess you did.
