I’m still trying to find original links, which unfortunately weren’t included in the article. If indeed Miley said what was quoted, I am in awe of her! What an amazingly wonderful thing to say! Like her or not, she’s HUGELY popular and yes, she is a big influence on many children, and will be for at least a few more years, so her saying that is…words fail me…important. More than important.
Sure she’ll lose some fans, those who are unduly influenced by their own parents’ bigotry, but most won’t care, and she’ll gain some fans.
Damn, now I have a hankering to see the Hannah Montana movie just to support her! I hope the loudmouths don’t get her to back down, and I hope Billy Ray comes to her aid verbally if the fundies really get nasty. He has his own fanbase who need to hear what his daughter said (if she said it).
It’s more evidence that hating gays will stop being even marginally acceptable when this current youth generation ages into dominance. The Old Guard is fighting a losing battle against inevitability, and the more they get crowded into their corner, the louder and shriller they’ll scream.
I talk to my boss (a lesbian) about this stuff sometimes, jayjay. I know she wants all of her rights NOW and I agree with her they should be given now, but it’s not always that easy to pass things. We need the current generation of lawmakers to move on, and then the next generation will hardly even know what the big deal was.
Suddenly have this peculiar, unfamilar urge to buy a Miley Cyrus CD. Can’t understand why. Perhaps will instead go to her web site and tell her I wouldn’t recognize one of her songs if I heard it 50 times but she just scored some major points with me.
Clearly she is confused and does not understand the Bible
Bwahahahaha!
Because as everyone knows the bible is NOT a collection of writings and stories open to interpretation by the reader. It is a book of undisputable facts on right and wrong that only they have interpreted the right way!
Sigmagirl, good idea. Yeah, the loudmouths are indeed…loud, so she needs to know that a lot of people are very grateful for her speaking out. What compassion, common sense* and bravery! Who would have thought? She went from being a non-entity who had no place in my sphere to being someone I deeply admire. And she’s what, 16? I have no idea, that’s how non-entity she is. Damn, I just can’t get over it. This may sound melodramatic, but I’ll bet she saves some lives. Some gay/lesbian kid somewhere, struggling, depressed, hearing bigoted adults telling them they’re worthless sinners, and here’s this megastar saying, no, God loves you too.
And quite to my surprise, I’m thinking of Billy Ray Cyrus in a different light too (not that I want to listen to his music, or hers). They must have raised her with tolerance and compassion.
I wonder if this will go down as one of the most important socially significant things to ever happen via Twitter. Twitter is a non-entity to me too, but I just went from thinking of it as a silly, useless bit of fluff, to being an important mouthpiece (in this case anyway).
*I’m an atheist but I’ve always said that the world would be a much better place if people who say they love Christ would actually act in a way that Christ would like, and Miley gets it.
Wow. I assumed such a squeaky-clean (well, except for the naked pictures) Disney-fied type like her wouldn’t be caught dead speaking out like that. Good for her. Y’all are right in that this will make a difference in the lives of a lot of young people. Step by step, we are moving forward.
For what it’s worth, the Hannah Montanna movie soundtrack isn’t bad. I picked it up because I like that song “The Climb” and because there’s a Taylor Swift song on it. Fun and pop-y.
I’ve read Miley’s autobiography and an interview or two with her- she is indeed a smart cookie, wise beyond her years. After reading her autobiography, I found a new respect for her about how much she’s been able to overcome and how much she’s learned (and I’ll admit her music is catchy too). The fact that she- who is part of a well-known openly Christian family whose father is on the board of the extremely right-wing Parents Television Council- can Twitter regarding the Perez Hilton/Miss California controversy directly TO Perez Hilton and make an intelligent comment about tolerating others (and, as she points out, the fundamentalist intolerance is so outspoken that it’s often stereotyped to all Christians) shows her intelligence, courtesy, and above all, friendliness. Miley would never hate anyone (except maybe Radiohead)- we should all take a lesson from her. And even if you do think homosexuality is a sin, you should at least, as the saying goes, love the sinner and hate the sin- after all, wasn’t there some guy who told us to love our enemies?
I’m neither a christian nor a particular fan of Ghandi, but I’m pretty sure the ones giving Miley flak for actually expressing agreements with the statements of Jesus are the same one Ghandi was referring to when he said, “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
But… but… teenagers hate teh ghey too! And how dare you even suggest that teenagers might be more accepting than some pigheaded adults think they are!
Maybe now, Miley Cyrus of all people, will kill the notion that being a gay teenager in 2009 is exactly the same as being a gay teenager in the 70s or 80s or even the 90s.
Eh, I’ll chime in and say that what she said isn’t all that big a deal. It’s a good thing, certainly, but I don’t think she realized she was taking a controversial stand when she said “God loves everyone”.
The real test comes now, now that a prominent group has spoken out against her. If, having taken criticism for these statements, she sticks to them, then I’ll have a heck of a lot of respect for her.
