Monitor is Resetting Resolution

I reinstalled Windows XP and reformatted my hard drive after a bad experiance. It lets me set my monitor at 1600 X 1024 and offers greater resolution that I cannot realize. Then after loading some “safe” software such as iTunes, Spywareblaster or such it let’s me continue under the same resolution, but when I log back in it limits my resoultion to something like 1024 x 764 and dosen’t let me choose any higher resolutions. I can get back by going to my saved settings but it is getting to be a pain.

Help dopers, please help!

May I piggy-back on this thread with another Windows XP monitor related question? There are so many computer question threads already I thought we could have one less if I just ask in here where hopefully there will be some knowlegable computer types already present.

Please address the OP first by all means.

Here is my issue: I have set and reset my power saving options but they don’t seem to register. I have tried to have my monitor turn off (and the whole comp go into standby mode) at 1 hour, a half hour, and even 15 minutes settings. And still after I come home from work the screensaver is still screen-saving. How can I get this thing to go to sleep so I can save some bux on my power bill??

bump.

Calling it a nignt.

HELP!

In response to the OP:

Have you tried setting the resolution like this?

I no longer have an ATI board. I have an MSI FX5600. I believe that you are on the right path but it is late and the first disk I put in led to the same problem. Any MSI FX5600 users out there? thanks.

Sorry, I should’ve specified: It doesn’t have to be an ATI board. Any regular Windows display driver should let you do that. Just ignore the ATI tabs.

What did you mean by “the first disk”?

Have you tried the “Save As” function and overwriting the default “Always On” profile? I’m not sure if that will work but it might be worth a try.
