My computer had a variant of one of the worm viruses, which modified the csrss.exe file and produced random ASCII porn popups. The computer tech fixed that, but also downloaded all the available windows updates. Ever since, my accursed computer defaults to very low display resolution settings when I restart Windows.
I’ve run the tweak from www.kellys-korner-xp.com (sets the “NoSaveSettings” value to 0), and set the BagMRU Size value to 4000. No luck.
I removed all the servicepack files I could find in the C:\windows directory that he installed; no luck there either (I’ve since restored them).
Is there anything I can do short of reinstalling Windows?
Also, I don’t know if it’s related, but when I launch IE and start to type an address, I have about a second before the cursor moves back to the beginning and messes up what I’m typing. I hate that. Anyway to fix that too?
If you’re running Norton or McAfee then scan all drives for viruses. If you’re not running them, get one or the other on your computer.
You also need those service packs the tech installed. Uninstalling them leaves your computer vulnerable.
If you paid a tech to fix this computer, then get the tech back to repair it. If not, scan the drives. Fix any viruses found. If none are found then reinstall Windows. Let it download all available service packs. Keep Norton or whatever running at all times. Safe computing means virus protection.
Norton was running, with the latest updates. I really have no idea how I got that virus–I never open attachments I’m not absolutely sure about. I’ve scanned several times since and found nothing.
The service packs are back in place, since removing them didn’t fix the problem
The tech didn’t cost me anything, as it’s through my school. It’s just that he needs my computer if he’s going to work on it, but I need it to do my own work, so I was hoping I could just fix it myself.
