Monster Jam - Monster Bust

Winnipeg, Manitoba was the site of Monster Jam this past weekend and because I have nothing better to do, I am going to share my experience.

  1. My son, who loves anything to do with trucks and machines, is disappointed that Monster Bus (on a quickcan’t seem to find a real pic) did not make the trip out to Winnipeg. His consolation is that Monster Mutt did.

2.I didn’t realize how many big-breasted red-neck women lived in and around Winnipeg.

  1. I paid good money to come here and yet they interrupt the show to have commercials play on the video screen. I can watch commercials on tv. Part of experience in attending a live event is supposed to be the lack of commercials.

  2. The quad racing pitting a team from Toronto against a team from Winnipeg was poorly staged. I don’t care for WWE antics and did not expect them at a Monster Truck show. In fact, it sounded scripted right down to where the Toronto captain says he wants to get out of Winnipeg because its -26C outside. It was, in fact, -2C.

  3. As in only 5 monster trucks came to Winnipeg. I know we are a small venue so I guess I should not have expected more.

  4. The arena is too small to host a monster truck show. A football stadium would have been better, even if it meant standing outside. The track was so short that the trucks basically popped the clutch, went over two cars and slammed on the brakes. the USHRA should insist on better venues. Not their fault but they should be mindful of this in the future.

  5. $25 - $30 is too much for a wind-up toy. I’ll buy it at Wal-Mart.

  6. Winnipeg is a different kind of audience. We don’t clap and scream for no reason. The announcer spent far too much time between and during events trying to get us to make noise. Do something amazing first. If you want cheering for the sake of cheering you should go somewhere else.

  7. The intermission with the remote control gas-powered cars was awesome. Those things can really move.

  8. The dirt bike free style jumps were incredible. I don’t watch much motocross but I have never seen a rider pull a superman, then let go completely, back to a superman, and land the jump.
My son had a blast, which is the main thing to remember. All in all though, not worth the $50 I spent. I would not go again unless they move it to a larger venue. I would, however, go to Minnesota to watch it in their stadium.

We saw the Monster Jam here in Edmonton, too. It was in our indoor hockey arena. I agree with all your criticisms. It’s way too small for monster truckers. They just give a little blip of gas, jump a couple of cars, and hit the brakes. Boring. The monster trucks were all from Alberta, except for GraveDigger (or rather one of the Gravediggers. I gather there are a few of them). The shtick was the same all around - the locals would compete against each other, a winner would be declared for the ‘final’ against Gravedigger, which would kick the other truck’s ass. Even once when the other truck was clearly the winner.

The best part of the whole thing was the R/C cars and the freestyle motocross guys.
