I’m thinking she’s part of Marc’s “idealized” Steven personality. He doesn’t talk to her, but Stephen “calls” her every day. Though his wife mentioned her, perhaps he lied to her about it and she is dead?
In the comics, Marc Spector was his birth name, and Steven Grant was an alias. If his mother is still around, she will call him Marc, not Steve.
I don’t think so. Layla mentions that Marc doesn’t talk to his mother, and we only see Steve leaving someone messages; he never talks to anyone, nor does he get messages in return. Ma Spector, like Layla in episode one, would wonder why her son talks with a British accent.
Wasn’t thrilled with the idea that the jackal monsters are invisible to normal people, for a couple reasons.
The first is, it almost always comes across as cheap. An invisible monster is one you don’t have to spend a lot of money on an effect for. Plus, it’s now two episodes in a row where he fought one of these things, but we didn’t actually get to see the fight, which is getting tired. But most of all, I’ve never been a fan of the “Normal people can’t see the supernatural” trope in general, and applying it here feels cheap in a different way: it’s an easy way to have everyone (including Steven) continue to question his sanity, while still having cool CGI fights. I mean, all the monsters and aliens and demons that have shown up in public in the MCU to this point, and the first guy to encounter invisible monsters also happens to be the first hero that has legitimate concerns about being crazy? Talk about shitty luck!
The third episode-not the strongest one, but decent. The fact that it’s a shorter series means they have to do a lot more cramming which isn’t conducive to a good show IMHO.
What I liked about this episode is that they actually gave Stephen something useful to do, instead of him being merely a ‘worm’. Marc/Stephen begin to function as a team. I’m still confused about what happened while he took over from Marc in the beginning, but that is apparently deliberate on the part of the makers.
I say the first few minutes: a guy breaking up glass and putting it into his shoes. My immediate reaction was “what kind of garbage is this” and quit.
The implication is that there is a third personality that neither of them knows about.
Not getting why the other gods just believe Harrow. Their avatars may only observe but they can still go and do that.
Check this scene from the first episode:
There’s two reflections in the glass case. Neither of them match Steven, or each other.
I really liked the idea of Khonshu trying to get the other gods to punish Harrow for a crime he hasn’t committed yet. A very Ammit thing to do.
Bonus points for the writers knowing that the stars were in different locations thousands of years ago. Penalty points for them not knowing that any good observatory or star application adjusts for that. I was expecting them to go traipsing off to consult an astronomer, instead of running the sky backwards.
Good catch.
Anyone else have audio problems with this episode? Khonshu’s dialogue was completely muffled and unintelligible for us. I adjusted every audio setting on my TV/sound bar, but nothing helped. All the other sound was fine, just when the birdman deity thing talked, it was all bass and like he was talking into a pillow.
Harrow is in the middle of committing the crime. He and his cult are literally digging up Ammit as they were speaking. The so-called inquiry was one of the stupidest things on the show, with the other gods basically taking Harrow’s word for it. These are immortal beings of immense knowledge and power, and they haven’t heard of lying? I’d much rather the show leaned more into the fact that they no longer give a shit.
My question is, with Khonshu imprisoned, does Marc have access to his avatar powers anymore?
No, he’s lost those now - Khonshu warned him in this episode that if the other gods imprison him, Marc will lose access to the Moon Knight costume, and the associated powers.
I don’t believe so. He asks Marc how he’s going to survive without the armor if Khonshu gets imprisoned.
EDIT: Ninja’ed! Or perhaps Knight’ed.
So Marc/Steven/to be named later and Layla now are to take on Harrow and minions without powers other than the knowledge Steven has and the skills that Marc and TBNL have, and the Layla’s knowledge and skills as well?
Marc clearly at least believes he is minimally morally culpable for Layla’s father’s death. Which may have been the event that lead to his personality split?
What was the something that occurred that led to Marc no longer having it (Steven) under control? Does it have to do with TBNL?
Why would Marc want to release Khonshu from his new stone home after this is over? Khonshu imprisoned is the only real way he gets to escape his servitude.
So far the first ep was by far the strongest. Hoping they bring together better in the next ones!
Maybe he feels that serving Khonshu is his penance for his life as Marc? Only tangentially related, but both Oscar Issac and Alice Eve have done really good work portraying people with DID IMHO.
Stealing the scarab in Austria seems to have caused the break. Steven thought he was sleepwalking before then, but that illusion was broken when he met Harrow and lost two full days. That awesome blew their cover so that Harrow tracked them, so Steven was all the way in by that point.
Speaking of which, the 3rd alter is now evident from the first episode. Marc would not have made the date with a coworker - he’s clearly still in love with Layla. Steve obviously didn’t make the date. Clearly someone else asked her out.
If he can beat Harrow without releasing Khonshu, I suspect Marc would be 100% in favor of that. But I’m guessing that he’s going to realize that he needs his Moon Knight powers to beat Harrow, and the only way to get those powers back is to free Khonshu.
Will the 3rd alter be part of a 2nd season? It seems like a big thing to toss in so late.
