Just got around to watching the first few episodes of this new animated series on Comedy Central, currently running in the coveted Wednesday-night-right-after-South-Park time slot.
Best way I can describe it is “Archer with an '80s cop drama vibe instead of a '60s spy thriller vibe”. It’s all neon and big hair and synthesizers and Rob Lowe and pinks and purples everywhere. A little more over the top and less intellectual than Archer, but it definitely channels the feel of Miami Vice and '80s action flicks pretty well.
“Every 11 seconds in Moonbeam City, 10,000 people get shot. 8,000 people get stabbed. 2,000 people get stabbed… and then fall into a bucket of knives and guns that stab and shoot them. 300 people get shot… with Novocaine… so it’s less painful when their teeth get stabbed. 80 people get stabbed with a knife shot from a gun. Some people call this getting shabbed. Of course, these statistics are incomplete because every second 90 statisticians get shot.”
One of the best opening lines in any comedy ever. I hope I’m not the only person still watching.
I would have liked it better if I could watch it without constantly thinking,* “It’s an Archer ripoff”*. *Archer *is still the funniest and most well-written show on TV, so this just comes off as a flashy, style-over-substance, pale imitation. The comedy and whit just flows naturally and effortlessly from Archer’s dialog. Moonbeam City just tries way too hard to be both hip and meta-hip and doesn’t quite make it. It may find an audience though.
