A few things. First, I really don’t care about what happened in times past. why should we? Does it matter that Protestants burnt witches in a more ignorant time? Why? What certainly matters is that they don’t do that today. So, I’m fine judging a religion based on how it is expressed in our time.
But, to answer your question, Islam has been visiting barbarism on the world for over a thousand years. You want proof. The proof can be seen in the way they treat women. They treat them the same way now as they did a thousand years ago. They’re chattel. And Allah forbid the few percent of the population that is born gay are ever found out?.

I( live near Dearborn ,Michigan, the largest Arab community outside the middle east. Years ago there would be stories in the papers about “honor killings” These would generally be when a girl dated or wanted to marry outside her religion.
It has been a long time since I read about one. That would suggest that even Muslims can adapt to the principles of the greater community they live in. The idea that Muslims are all some kind of fanatics welded to a dangerous and unchanging religion is not correct in my experience.
We have friends that wear burkhas. We have Arab friends that don’t. We are on the same political groups. They are just people. Trying to paint them all because a nut did something crazy, is just bigotry. It is fearing people who are different. It is terrible.
After the Oklahoma City bombing, I did not hate all white guys from Michigan.
Quick clarification: “when the guy int the turban does it [and tells you he’s doing it because of his religion], he’s being inspired by his religion”.
The solution, actually, lies with those on the left. They need to stop inadvertently giving the barbarians room to operate in. Take this very thread, I know it’s not the goal, but those arguing against pointing to Islam and saying that there is something about that religion that can be—and is—used as justification for acts we all despise.
Look at how the left on this board go after racists, or homophobes (or even those who merely object to SSM), or birthers, or Young Earth Creationists. There is an attempt to eradicate the beliefs by ridiculing them and arguing from a position that seeks to STOP what is viewed to be the bad behavior/belief. But not when it comes to threads like this. Nope. Let’s take what was basically a rant against barbarism and hold the OP to the scrutiny of a paper handed in for debate class. Why not participate in this thread and the larger discussion with the same passion and goal—eradication of the barbarism—in a way that marginalizes the radical beliefs, and not those calling Islam onto the carpet. Do you realize how much energy has been spent trying to go after me for supposedly painting all Islam with a broad brush? Imagine if that energy is spent giving the extremists no quarter. It seems those on the left do not understand that the arguments they use gives the barbarians ideological protection. “Oh, Islam is so misunderstood…unjustly blamed for the ills of the world…not everyone is like that, just look at sweet little Achmed…it’s the right in America that hates, not us…” Like it or not, that’s what’s happening. Instead, make any acceptance of radicalism and barbarism completely unacceptable. Seek to change the number in the poll offered earlier in the thread. Treat anyone who gives them quarter with contempt. Look at the treatment in this very thread of someone who they view as a birther. Look at the energy they go after him with for pointing out that Andersen Cooper is not a serious cite. Does THAT opinion really merit a tenth of the vitriol it’s got him, even if he’s wrong? Who gives a shit? It’s Anderson fucking Cooper! That poster, and I, get not one benefit of one doubt. But the religion that is responsible for more more barbarism in today’s world than any other…well some posters will tie themselves in knots and bend themselves backwards till their heads go up their asses looking for the most ridiculous reasons why the charges against islam are wrong or Islam is being treated unfairly.

They can’t help but reveal their true selves. Liberals are like that. Full of hate and loathing and just unwilling to open their minds to reality. So they are forced to disparage anything that threatens to invalidate the arbitrarily chosen belief systems that float around in their heads.

Well, for one I started this thread, bringing attention to that poor girls plight. And hopefully preventing it from happening to another little girl. It’s a small thing, I readily admit. You, on the other hand, have worked against that. Even if inadvertently. Hope you feel good about that.
