In addition to all the other issues people are having, I have a few that I haven’t seen mentioned yet.
The most noticeable issue I’m seeing is that quote boxes aren’t displaying correctly. I’ll just post a picture since that’s easier. Notice the incorrect spacing at the top of the box with the icon and my name pushed way over.
If I view the page without being logged in, or more importantly, with the default skin, it’s fine, so I assume this is, yet another, problem with the Vincent skin.
The next thing I’ve been noticing is a lot of empty quotes. I don’t think it’s a fluke since I only started noticing since the update and it’s been happening a lot. What I’m not sure about is if this is a problem in and of itself or if this is a result of people trying to fix quotes because of the issue with the cursor being dropped in the wrong place.
Another one I mentioned somewhere else is, under certain circumstances, when I’m typing something, the page ‘blinks’ in time with the cursor. In fact, I had to switch to the markdown editor to write this post since I can’t do it with the page flashing at me.
I also noticed yesterday, when trying to link to a video (MP4) on imgur, I was getting an error about embedded media and it wouldn’t let me post it. This would be unrelated to other imgur issues we’ve had lately and I’m also not sure how new of a problem it actually is since videos on imgur (MP4, gif, gifv etc) and this site don’t always play nice together.
Edit, I should point out that those are screenshots of quotes from other threads. I’m sure it’s obvious if you’re reading this with a white background, but on my screen they blend right in and look like normal quotes.
First read this, in the Vincent theme, then open the spoiler to see it in your theme.
Summary
Did you notice the bold text?
Also, if anyone from discourse should happen to read this, please fix the way bold font is displayed in the Vincent theme. Unless someone specifically mentions that something is bold (ie ‘bolding mine’), I won’t notice it and even when I’m told, I have to go and look for it. In this theme, bolded text is actually slightly less bold than the regular text.
I created one of those posts, because i made a mistake, and discourse wouldn’t let me delete the whole quote. I finally gave up and deleted the content in the quote tag, left the empty quote tags, and quoted the thing again. Because I’m a mod, i checked a while later and it let me edit out the blank quote tags, so i did so. But most posters can’t do that.
The specific mistake i made was to start typing inside the quote tag, because discourse often puts the cursor there right now. And when i tried to remove what i typed, i deleted too much, and rather than risk misquoting someone, i decided to delete the whole thing and start over.
Anyway, I’m very frustrated with the current state of affairs, and hope the discourse team fixes it soon.
(Posting on my phone, a pixel 9, in the Chrome browser, using straight dope light theme, i think.)
Now that I’m accustomed to the basic markdown editor (not the WYSIWYG one) and am no longer complaining about it, AFAICT (I might be missing something) there are no further problems in Straight Dope Light and Windows with the Edge browser. So for those still seeing problems, it must be some combination of a particular theme and/or mobile view. Everything looks good on my tablet, too, with Android and Firefox, but I have mobile view turned off.
Judging from the image, “bold” attribute actually makes the typeface smaller.
In typography, is there a standard “timid” weight?
I’m glad I don’t use Vincent theme.
Also, for some reason, in this editing window Markdown editing is happening right now in serif proportional font, not the more typical monospace font. Weird.
It’s because you’re typing in the quote tags correctly, using the interface that expects you not to be typing in tags. In the top-left corner of your response window, there’s a slider-switch. Toggle that, and you’ll be back in tag mode instead of WYSIWYG mode.
If you tap on the 3-line (hamburger) icon above/right of the reply text box,
you should get a line of edit icons, the first of which should be a slider switch..
It should either look like M ↓ or A. Tap that to toggle between modes.
