Favorite? Prob’ly Daffy Duck, specifically the one on display in “Duck Amuck” and “Robin Hood Daffy” (“It’s really a buck-and-a-quarter quarterstaff…but I’m not telling him that.”) Followed closely by the ultracool Bugs Bunny, from the same period. In fact, that whole 50’s-era Warner’s output from Jones, Freleng, McKimson et al. is pretty much pure gold; perfect essence of cartoon. We should be sending copies of these out on our space probes.
Also, Snoopy from the Peanuts specials… I love how even though he has no lines (just that wonderful Bill Melendez growl), the quirky, intelligent personality from the comic strip comes through perfectly.
Least favorite…well, excepting the obligatory Woody Woodpecker (does anybody actually like the bastard?), Ralph Bakshi’s oevre, post-Jonny Quest Hanna-Barbera (except for Velma, she was way hotter than Daphne, I don’t care, not listening LALALALALA), and most everything from Japan…
Damn, really an embarrasment of riches. I’m just going to say Homer Simpson.
I can’t stand Jerry (Tom & Jerry of course). Gah I hate him. Tom was just usually vegging in the hammock with some lemonade, and here comes that little prick Jerry to bother him.
Have any of you ever seen a Woody Woodpecker cartoon (from the 40’s, not 60’s, even though those are okay too)? He’s hillarious! He’s maniacal, scary, and unpredictable. And he’s such a rare treat (the only one anyone can ever see is “Pantry Panic”, but it’s a great one). His character design is amusing enough all by itself (when I show people his 40’s character design, it whets their appetite for a classic WW cartoon).
Anyway:
Love
Zim - no explination necessary
Ghandi - Clone High is corny, but it’s fun to watch Ghandi jump around the screen
Saddam Hussein (South Park) - insane character, voice and animation, and such a rare treat
Terrance & Phillip - see above (Not Without My Anus was the best thing ever)
Peggy Hill - everything she says is funny
Dale Gribble - I wish I knew him IRL
Lord Bravery - uptight British superhero, it writes itself
Donald Duck - Disney’s best character ever
Hated:
Dot - She’s not cute at all
Jimmy Newtron - The wiz kid thing has been done to death, and with much better character designs
The “new” Stan (South Park) - he suddenly went from curious kid to know-it-all smartass. WTF?!
Didgeri Dingo - too cruel to Taz
I’m surprised. I thought it was a given that Scrappy-Doo was easily the most despised cartoon character ever created. Honorable mention goes to The Great Gazoo and 99% of sidekicks.
And Cartoon Network’s original programming is uneven, but the good stuff is awesome. It’s just that the bad stuff (Cow & Chicken, Sheep in the Big City, Ed, Ed & Eddy) is really bad. The Powerpuff Girls is one of the best animated series ever, certainly the best new series since Batman. Dexter’s Laboratory has long stretches of mediocre punctuated by brilliance every once in a while (usually parody episodes like their Speed Racer parody or the Willie Wonka parody). And even the worst animation is made better by their consistently hilarious ads. Big fan of Cartoon Network here.
My favorite cartoon characters: Mojo Jojo Foghorn Leghorn Pepe le Pew
and of course, Solomon Grundy. Crush the Superfriends!
I like Sheep in the Big City myself-it’s the stupidness that makes it funny. I haven’t watched it in a while, though. Do they still have the Ranting Swede bit? And the only good episode of Dexter’s Lab is the 1 with the opera-thankfully you can download an mp3 of that.
Favorites:
Daria (love that show!)
Apu
most of the characters on Futurama (great show during Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. However, the crab guy is annoying)
Buttercup
Mike from Monsters, Inc.
Drives me nuts!
afomentioned crab guy from Futurama (don’t know why…)
Scrappy Doo. His voice is soooo grating!
Peggy Hill (totally ruined King of the Hill for me)
Ed, Edd, and Eddy. What IS the point of that show?
Peter Puppy (from Earthworm Jim - anyone who compulsively recites the “Fear” litany is OK with me)
The Brain
Ursula the Sea-Witch (ay, what a voice!)
Dexter Douglas (I liked him much more than Freakazoid himself)
. . . and a shout out to the previous poster who mentioned Lord Bravery.
Ick:
The entire cast of Scooby Doo except for Velma
Tweety Bird (there’s a difference between survival instinct and sadism, y’know?)
Every single cartoon mouse except for Mickey and Speedy Gonzales, for that matter
Road Runner (not sadistic, just brainless)
-The new Batman, Superman and Justice League series.
Wince at:
-Daffy Duck as the perpetual loser, dumped on simply so Bugs looks so cool by comparison.
-Mr. Hanky. Yes I get the joke- the worst possible “Christmas” character imaginable- but he’s still nauseating.
Hate
-Jerry, Chip & Dale, Tweety, and every other cute little squeaky voiced character who gets to act like a sadistic sociopath simply the person he’s fighting is bigger than he is.
Scrappy Doo needs to be in a fight to the death with the chicken hawk. I would honestly pay to see that. My money is on the chicken hawk.
Peggy Hill needs to pull her head out of her ass so she can grow a backbone.
Most Hanna Barbeara cartoons suck.
Most disney cartoons suck.
Minmei is whiny and self absorbed.
I liked most of the cast of Daria.
I love most of the adult swim cartoons especially sealab and futurama.
I like Wile E. Cyote, he tries so darn hard never gives up and is arguably the most intelligent of all the looney tunes.
Ooh, count me in on that one too! Damn those two were annoying. It’d be a showdown of “I’m the best”, “no, I’m the best”.
I also love the entire cast of Daria. On the other hand, Beavis and Butthead (incidently, the show from which Daria as a character spawned) drive me nuts. What is it about that moronic pair that people like?
I must say, most of the replys on this thread are very tasteful
Congratulations to all daria lovers…that program is pure genius!!
Well maybe not genuis, but its sooooo funny
AND THAT ANNOYING SCRAPPY DOO. Why? Why invent such a stupid character? I think it was a ploy to make us like scooby more in hate of scrappy!
But i must express my disappointment that noone has mentioned there favourite ninja turtle! Come on people, we are the generation of ninja turtle lunchboxes!
Let me preface this by saying I am not a cartoon watching kind of person, but I married one and spawned another, so cartoons are a fact of my life whether I want them there or not.
But I love Zim, and especially adore his little buddy, G.I.R. I also like Buttercup of the Power Puff Girls, Dexter (although I cannot STAND his voice), Johnny Bravo, and Chuckie from the Rugrats(whose voice I CAN stand, despite the fact that it’s the same person who does Dexter’s voice - go figure). I like Bugs, but hate Daffy.
I HATE Woody Woodpecker, Scooby-Doo and all his cohorts, and that gawdawful Donald Duck.
I think I was watching different Tom and Jerry episodes than the rest of you. Most of the ones I saw had Tom going after Jerry first. And Jerry never (or hardly ever) spoke.
I always liked Jerry, the Roadrunner, Bugs Bunny, Speedy Gonzalez, Woody Woodpecker, Furball from Tiny Toons and the Warner kids from Animaniacs. Also, Stitch from Lilo and Stitch and the cricket from Mulan. Oh, and Freakazoid. And my favorite Ninja Turtle was Raphael.
I hate Scrappy Doo, Minmei (I wouldn’t have thought of her without the mention above, though), and all the characters on that “wrestling kids” cartoon I accidently watched about 5 minutes of and that scared me for life.
Favorites Stewie- C’mon people! How could you forget Stewie? The greatest manical baby that ever was and that ever will be. Zoidberg- He’s just so…funny… Bugs Bunny- A classic, the first cartoon character I ever saw. Hes smart and resourceful. When I grow up I want to be Bugs! Donadelo- My favorite ninja turtle.
Once the previous posts were read, my list has grown:
Those I love:
Bugs Bunny and other Looney Toons Rocky & Bullwinkle Dudley Dooright & Fractured Fairy Tales Early Popeye Tom Terrific which really shows my age Cool McCool Inspector Gadget Ren & Stimpy Duckman Aeon Flux such a babe! South Park Sponge Bob
Those I dislike:
Dora the Explorer (must you repeat everything 18 times?) Roly Poly Olies Strange. Period. Tom & Jerry As a little kid, it struck me as animated violence.
Although not a cartoon, what is with the Wiggles ? Jesus, those guys are doing some serious amphetamines!
yong lee fampee, AMEN to that “Family Guy” comment, it’s beyond me how people can enjoy the absurd jokes they try to cram down the viewers’ throats. Ever think that subtle humour is funny too or even satirical and/or historical humour? do you have to have Kool-Aid Man jumping in and yelling type jokes every 5minutes to get a cheap laugh? Utter BullSh!t in writing… Simpsons BY FAR outwrites this crap. well for the earlier years of Simpsons. Nowadays they are turning into the new “Family Guy”.
Lumpy , AMEN to your SAMURAI JACK vote. Honorable, naive to his new settings and absolute hilarity with minimal amount of dialogue and great amount of action.
well to my list…
I dont hate much but add the “family guy” (any character from this utter crap show) to the small list.
I love Samurai Jack, Homer Simpson, Patrick Star (from Spongebob Squarepants), Piccolo and Gohan (from Dragonball Z, actually i love most of the chars from this show), and many others but cant name them all.
I must be the only one who dislikes Bugs Bunny. Actually, I dislike all the Loony Tunes characters (although that Martian fella with his whatcha-ma-ding modulator was occassionally interesting). I just don’t get them, I guess. Not funny at all.
My favorite chartoon character is Goliath from “Gargoyles”.
