Mouse driver problem - Pls help

I had a MS Intellimouse running just fine (with the wheel scrolling and the wheel button set to double-click). From many hours of use my hand was beginning to hurt where I rest it on the desk so I thought I’d try a Genius Easy Trak serial port trackball I had lying around. No drivers can be found at the Genius website. It took me a while and the only driver I could find was at www.driverguide.com.

I connected the trackball to COM2 and installed the driver but, not only did the trackball not work at all but it messed up my intellimouse.

I have removed every trace of the Genius trackball driver I could find and removed and reinstalled the Intellimouse driver several times but the wheel and wheel button just will not work. It works just like a simple two-button mouse.

Can someone help me out and tell me what I can do to get the wheel and wheel button working again? What did the Genius leave behind that prevents the MS Intellimouse from working?

What OS? Win2k and higher have built in support for a wheel. I remember NT4 and lower you had to do a registry hack to enable third button support. Did you open up the mouse applet in Control Panel and ensure that the middle button is set to do something (default = Autoscroll)? If you’re using Win9x (and maybe WinME) check the System.ini file for the “mouse=” line. I have an Intellimouse Explorer and my ini file has the following entry:

system=*vmouse,msmouse.vxd

Sorry, that should read:

mouse=*vmouse,msmouse.vxd

Try a Logitech Track Ball FX. It fits the hand comfortably with no cramping. Easy to use. Has additional control features to close application, hyper jumps arrow to anction buttons. Four buttons & scroll with ball. No mouse pad. Drivers on CD. Can’t live without it or them as I have two.

Aslo have a wireless keyboard, (you might prefer a IR). Very convenient to work with on lap, leaving desk area clear for writing, taking notes, (eats), etc.

Sorry I forgot to mention I am using WIN98SE. I finally managed to get the MS Intellimouse to work again by going thorugh the register and deleting every mention of the Genius and MS devices, then deleting every single file I could find on the disk related to either of them and then reinstalling the MS driver. That did the trick but it was a huge waste of time.

I checked the System.ini file and it now has the following lines:

[boot]
mouse.drv=mouse.drv

[boot.description]
mouse.drv=Microsoft Mouse

Try using the “add remove hardware” tool in control panel to take out the old driver first. Then reboot with the new mouse attached. If you have a “plug and pray” system, it may pick it up the new mouse and run with it. If it does not recognize it try using the same feature (in control panel) to install the new mouse.
Otherwise I’ll bet you may have a entry for the registry key
HKLM\software\Microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
along the lines of (for logitech…)
D:\PROGRA~1\Logitech\MOUSEW~1\SYSTEM\EM_EXEC.EXE
If that is still there, and differs from the mouse you are using, consider deleting it. Things that are there run win windows opens. If you are not comfortable in the registry, have someone help you, as there is no “undo” feature there.

Now I look at your post and see you did do the registry thing. I swear I looked at your post and missed that. Maybe I should read the words instead of just looking at them…
