Mouseover on thread titles?

When you hover the mouse over the thread titles here on the Dope, the text box opens to let you read the first few sentences of the thread. It seems that the amount of time the text box stays open varies depending which computer I am using. My question is, how to you make it stay open as long as you are hovering the mouse over it?

It would help if you specified your browser and it’s version. I know the tooltips* in older versions of Firefox would timeout after a few seconds, but more recent versions of Firefox has it so they are persistent as long as your cursor is on them. So depending on what browser you’re using, the answer could be to just upgrade.

  • In case you didn’t know, “tooltip” is the tech jargon name for what you’re asking about.

ETA: If you’re running a version of Firefox between 1.5 & 3.5 and for some reason don’t want to upgrade, here’s an addon to do what you want: (I believe versions beyond 3.5 have default persistent tooltips)

Sorry, I should have mentioned that, I just loaded Firefox 4.0.1. This version closes as soon as you hover over it.

I’m using the same version, and it does what I would expect - it removes it as soon as I move the mouse off the title. As long as I leave the mouse there, it stays up.

For purposes of discussion, this seems to be implemented via a “title” attribute on the <TD> table tag, as opposed to javascript “onmouseover” / “onmouseout” events which is another way it could be done.

I’m using Chrome 11.0.696.60 beta…and the tool tips vanish on their own. I move the cursor around slight while reading - it apparently restarts the timer and keeps the tip up.

The length of time varies for me. Sometimes the mouseover disappears fairly quickly, but if I mouse-over it again, it will stay.
