I saw this movie when I was in high school so circa 1998? Anyway, it was about a young English girl who lives in India, I think she is supposed to be an orphan, and is being raised in a nobleman’s house hold. She falls in love with a young Indian boy who is working at the estate as a gardener/servant. He is a poet I think, and eventually the girl gets pregnant. I think I remember them trying to run away together but she loses the baby and they end up parting ways. It was on PBS when I saw it, maybe a BBC program? Does this ring a bell to anyone?
I should add, it obviously took place during early 1900s, when India was still part of the British Empire.
This could’ve been one of Rumer Godden’s books adapted by PBS. I forget the title but it starred --oh, the guy that played Sayid on LOST and also was in The English Patient… Sorry I can’t look it up on IMDb as I’ have a truly crappy wifi connection right now. It could’ve been An Episode of Sparrows but I really don’t remember off hand. I love all her books.
The Peacock Spring, not An Episode of Sparrows.
You are wonderful! I remember that pretty well, except for the orphan part. Thanks so much!
Well apparently it isn’t put on video so I won’t get to see it again any time soon except for clips. Darn.
