Movies: Famous Last Words

Well, it’s not exactly a quote as there is no dialogue in the death scene, but for me, the incongruously beautiful chiming of the musical pocketwatch in the final showdown between Colonel Mortimer and Indio in Sergio Leone’s For A Few Dollars More stands out in my mind.

For that matter, I suddenly realized one day when listening to the late-90s song Your Woman by Whitetown that the melody in the “hook” for the song is the same as the first part of the pocketwatch melody from For A Few Dollars More, just synthesized and sped up. Not sure if that was intentional or not though, as it’s only five notes.

“I have run about as far as I care to…today, was a good day!”
—Helfdane, The 13th Warrior

“It’s no use, V.I.N.CENT, my useful days are finished, but part of me goes
with you. We’ll never be obsolete. Carry on the tradition. We’re the
best.”—B.O.B., The Black Hole

“Is that the best you can do, you pansies?” - Marv, Sin City

** HAL:** I’m afraid. I’m afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I’m a… fraid. Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois on the 12th of January 1992. My instructor was Mr. Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you’d like to hear it I can sing it for you.

** Dave Bowman:** Yes, I’d like to hear it, HAL. Sing it for me.

** HAL:** It’s called “Daisy.” Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do. I’m half crazy all for the love of you. It won’t be a stylish marriage, I can’t afford a carriage. But you’ll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two.

Had that as my shutdown sound for my computer for about a week. Only computerized last words I like more were SHODAN’s in System Shock (but alas, that’s not a movie)
