Movies With No Love Interests

McMurphy sneaks two women, including his girlfriend Candy, into the ward and arranges for Billy Bibbit to lose his virginity to Candy.

Isn’t that more lust than love? Next you’ll be paying Annie Wilkes loved Paul Sheldon.

McMurphy and Candy appear to have genuine affection for one another, and Billy Bibbit is smitten by Candy. I’m sure Billy thinks he’s in love with her.

I was just going to say this. One of the greatest movies ever.

The Hobbit (1977).

Pinocchio

The Red Balloon

Kon-Tiki

I didn’t particularly notice any love interest in Plan 9 From Outer Space

**Flight of the Phoenix

Sleuth** (both versions. Although love is referred to, it’s never on-stage)

**Duel

The Call of Cthulhu

The Whisperer in Darkness

The Human Centipede

The Quatermass Xperiment/The Crawling Unknown

Quatermass 2/Enemy from Space

Quatermass and the Pit/20 Million Years to Earth

50 Million Miles to Earth

Conquest of Space

War of the Worlds

The Andromeda Strain

Kronos

Sure. After having known each other for, what, a day or two? Done in real time, the whole play, and by extension the whole romance, fits into a long holiday weekend. Worse, apart from their lying in bed together, they hardly have a moment together that’s not depicted explicitly in the two hour run-time of the film or play, and so by extension their time together amounts to less than 24 hours. Little more than a dusk till dawn “romance.”

I’ll grant that in the context of Hollywood, a brief fling amounts to a “love interest,” but let’s not fall into the trap of thinking that R&J is really about love so much as it is about teenage lust and the deleterious effects of long-standing blood feuds.

Assuming we’re talking about the original (I’ve seen the remake, but wasn’t paying too much attention to how closely it followed the original, and it was forgettable in its own right), the love interest is the Senator’s daughter, and her tragic relationship with the other Senator’s son*.

*ETA: Or is he a stepson? You know, Angela Lansbury’s kid, the “war hero.”

The romance between Mr. Furious and the waitress at their favorite diner is a fairly major subplot. Also, the Shoveler is married, although his wife only appears in one brief scene and he briefly references her in another, those two scenes are pivotal to his character and his rallying of the Mystery Men.

Koyaanisqatsi

War of the Worlds–

Not what you’re asking, the total opposite. In the original War of the Worlds film, 1953, there’s a scene where the male/female survivors are out on a farm or in a pasture looking far off at the tripods destroying kingdom come, and they have this little moment of typical romance.

“NOW IS NOT THE TIME FOR ROMANCE.” Good grief.

Battleship Potemkin.

My Dinner with Andre
Ravenous
Captains Courageous

I know there is foreplay and copulation in just about every Bond film, but do they actually have any real love stories, or just laid stories?

Obviously you’ve never seen On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

You are so right.

Dead Man Walking

Bond also falls in love with Vesper in Casino Royale (2006), and she’s in love with him, to the point where they are discussing marriage.

Bond is probably only in lust with most other Bond girls, but some of them are in love with him.

Unless you disqualify it on account of Jack’s wife being shown for a half-minute near the beginning, The Hunt for Red October should count.

Hot Fuzz has no love interest. Just an overly focused cop and his partner.

Incident at Loch Ness

It has been a while since I last Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, but I am not remembering any kind of love interest element in it.

Men Who Stare at Goats

Dark Star

I want to say Dead Man, except most of the events of the movie devolve from a brief incident at the beginning where the two lovers end up dead because of jealous rage, which is insignificant other than being the cause of the story.
