Movies you're looking forward to in 2006?

It would’ve been a nice change in tempo. The vampires in Underworld were exhausted-looking, sulky Eurotrash. I’ve made a few posts about Underworld in the past, and while I totally agree with Sailboat, I won’t try to dampen Eleanor’s enthusiasm.

“The devil has built a robot!” One of my favorites.

I love Jack Black. And as luck would have it, I’m listening to the High Fidelity soundtrack right now.

I know a couple of very weird photos from Nacho Libre have turned up on the net. There’s an especially crazy one where JB is wearing what appears to be a wedding dress made out of birds. It’s hard to describe, but I’ll try to find it.

I’m looking forward to the World’s Fastest Indian.

Miami Vice

You don’t even need to wait and see. I will guarantee you right now that the movie will be shit. And I don’t mean not as good as it could have been, I mean it will be boring, incomprehensable, and laughably inept.

Seriously, Uwe Boll couldn’t make a decent movie if he tried.

A friend of ours brought the DVD of Alone in the Dark to one of our Bad Movie Nights recently, and it was one of the least competently made movies I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot of terrible movies, including most of the run of MST3K. How that idiot gets work, I’ll never understand. He’s as inept as Ed Wood but without any of the charm and creativity.

I’m looking forward to Untitled Will Ferrell NASCAR Comedy.

Folks, I guaran-damn-tee you that Pirates of the Caribbean 2 is going to be in line with Men In Black 2, Mission Impossible 2 and Charlie’s Angels 2.

It’s major appeal was that it was a big fun extravaganza and nothing else really looked like it or felt like it before. The second one is just a “cash in on the success”. That’s opposed to say, X-Men 2 or Spiderman 2 which were both clearly set-up from the start to be franchise pictures. I don’t hold out much hope for it. I hope I’m proven wrong, though, but I get the sense that it was one of those “captured magic in a bottle” moments. They got the right tone, the right performances, the right style, and hit it out of the park, but really I doubt they can get it again.

I’m also looking forward to the Scorcese remake of Internal Affairs (a Hong Kong, not Korean movie).

Also, it looks like the Coen brothers might have something coming out this year, written and directed by Joel & Ethan Coen. I’m always excited for one of their movies. Lately, their movies have been either written or directed by someone else. They seem best when they’re collaborating. Not many details at IMDB, though.

Bearing in my mind the only films I know about are the ones listed above, the ones I’m most looking orward to are:

Underworld 2 - I liked the first one.
Pirates of the Caribbean 2 - sounds like fun.
Southland Tales - anything with the Rock in is good for me.
Tenacious D and The Pick of Destiny - should be a laugh, love Jack Black.

I was also looking forward to the Dungeon Siege film, but I see it’s not being released this side of the pond.

Match Point – everyone says this is Allen back on form. I’m one of the few who think that the Woodman hasn’t been in a creative slump since Deconstructing Harry (OK, I grant you Celebrity and Hollywood Ending), so I expect this one’s going to be wonderful.

Also, the Pirates of Caribbean Sequel, Lady in the Lake, and Superman.

I don’t know. The whole last scene leaves things very open-ended. There’s no need for a sequel to tell more of the story and it could have stopped there, but I’m sure they had an eye on keeping it going. But you’re right about the different expectations and I don’t know if the sequel will be any good. “Jack shows up again!” could be an easy way to wander into lame-sequel cliche territory.

I wasn’t that thrilled with the first Pirates of the Caribbean, so I doubt I’ll bother with the second one. It was okay, but I didn’t understand why it was such a phenomenon. Sure it had hot guys and whatever, but Johnny Depp has been much, much hotter in other movies. Ones where he had good teeth, even.

Hey, at least he’s giving Gary Coleman a shot at the movies.

Wait a minute…

You’re right.

They definitely left it open for a sequel, but in the same way that at the end of a horror movie, they show the killer open his eye before “The End” comes up on screen. Like, “we’re leaving room for a sequel” not “we planned a few movies from the get go.”

Maybe I’m splitting hairs. There’s a distinction in my mind even if I’m not verbalizing it.

There’s just some movies that are appealing in large part because of their originality (e.g. M.I.B.). When you take that “originality” aspect away by making a sequel, you’re just left with guys you’ve seen before doing more stuff. Captain Jack Sparrow was one of the most entertaining characters in recent history, but do you want to see Depp do that for another 2 hours? I guess most people do. It’s coming up a lot in this thread.

The distinction with something like X-Men is that on top of the original story, they worked in a the storyline of a brewing conflict between man and mutant. You expect that to be explored.

Would we be psyched for a follow up to “The Big Lebowski” or “Pulp Fiction” just because those are filled with great characters? I like the spot they occupy in my mind. I’m content to let it be.

(whoa. ever have a post get away from you? sorry for the hijack.)

Forget about colonial history! Bring on the underage Native American babe!

Ahem. History, yes, quite.

Fur a biopic starring Nicole Kidman as Diane Arbus.

No, I understand it. It comes down to the fact that the movie is unnecessary. The characters aren’t going to grow more or anything like that. The thing could, in theory, still be fun.

You know, I passed that over before without curiousity kicking in.

Allow me to say, now, that Uwe Boll directing Gary Coleman who is playing himself in a movie based on the videogame Postal is one of the most perplexing things I’ve ever learned of.

Maybe he’ll lead the marching band.

Nah, you won’t rain on my parade. I’ve been known to look people in the eye and tell them I liked The Fifth Element. And Chronicles of Riddick. So I’m used to the scorn.

Besides, vampire Bill Nighy? That’s entertainment. If only we get to see Sir Derek vamped up…
