Mr. Christie, you make good (pirate) cookies

In Canada, amongst the Oreos and Chips Ahoy, we have these oatmeal/peanut butter confections known as Pirate cookies. I am trying to find out a little history about them, particularly with regards to the name. Peanut butter doesn’t really scream “pirate!” to me. Googling hasn’t been much help so far. I wanted to at least get a sense of when they came on the market so as to better guess at why the name. Mr. Christie died in 1900, so I’m guessing they came out earlier than that, but I could be wrong.

I remember the package originally had a pirate on it. Don’t know when they took that off.

Also don’t know when they changed the biscuits from having a knobbly pattern to the current woven pattern. I want the knobblies back!
