Musical travel

I thought of another one. I have eaten at Tom’s Restaurant in NYC; the inspiration for Tom’s Diner, by Suzanne Vega. It was also the exterior for the cafe in Seinfeld, so there was loads of Seinfeldian ephemera, but I did see one framed article about the restaurant’s connection to Vega.

Has anyone ever been to Alice’s Restaurant?

I never been to Spain
But I been to Arizona. (am right now)
I’m sure I wasn’t born there
But I really don’t remember.
Both Oklahoma
and Arizona
What does it matter?

I also went from Phoenix Arizona all the way to Tacoma, but more often all the way to Monona (WI), many times on RT 66 most of the way.

Well if you ever plan to motor east
Jack take my way, it’s the highway that’s the best
Get your kicks on Route 66

Well it winds from Holbrook to Springfield
More than 1500 miles all the way
Get your kicks on Route 66

I’ve been over Wolf Creek Pass (way up on the great divide) and I went all the way into downtown Pagosa Springs. Note to CW: the road flattens out for miles before it hits the feed store. No trouble stopping even with no brakes.

eta If I’m leaving my wife and going from LA to Albuquerque and Oklahoma, there will never be a time I’ll get to Phoenix. I’m taking the 10 to the 15 to I40 through Flagstaff.

Just don’t be a terror.

Yes, but probably not the one you’re thinking of.

This one is on Skyline Blvd in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

I have driven up Grapevine Hill, albeit not in a Lincoln either. I was driving with the normal flow of car traffic, but I was passing trucks like they were standing still. On that grade the trucks get their own special super slow lane.

The first time I went to California I went to Fatburger. It wasn’t 2 in the morning, more like 10 PM. But still, it was a good day.

I wouldn’t mind driving 38 miles up the Canol Road, after hitting the four wheel drive at Johnson’s Crossing. I would rather not due in the middle of winter.

I was walking through the streets of Soho in the rain when I came across a place called Lee Ho Fook. I did not have the beef chow mein.

I lived in Surf City, so I didn’t have to strap my board to my back (was that ever a thing?) or hitch a ride in my wetsuit. Sadly, the girl to boy ratio was actually just one to one.

Yes. There is still one in Stockbridge, MA, though with a different manager.

I’m only 24 hours from Tulsa. Even less, actually.

Who here has passed by the Hoover Factory, the grand art-deco building eulogized by Elvis Costello?

“Five miles out of London on the Western Avenue
Must have been a wonder when it was brand new”

I have !
We used to have an office/data center in Greenford, just along the road.

I’ve driven up and down Idaho’s “Spiral Highway” which was memorialized (but not named) in the song “Hot Rod Lincoln.” By the time Commander Cody recorded the 1971 hit version, the lyrics had been modified to change the locale to Los Angeles.

I’ve been to the location of Aeolian Hall; where Rhapsody in Blue had its premiere in 1924. I didn’t see any indication there’s a concert hall there anymore. There may be a different building there now, or just the old one remodeled.

All of my musical tourism seems to be to NYC. I was there for a weekend some tears ago and saw Fantasia 2000. RiB is part of it, with animation of New York City and showing places I’d visited on that same day.

Would you say New York, New York is a wonderful town?

I’ve been to New York, New York several times, but I don’t think I can say I’ve made it there. This seems to have no bearing on whether I can make it other places.

Chicago, though, is my kind of town.

If anyone is interested, next week I’m going to Kansas City. Kansas City, here I come.

Are you gonna get you some crazy little woman there?

Once in New York (which is alright, if you like saxophones), I tried to find a building called Whitehall Street, where Arlo Guthrie was famously injected, inspected, detected, and neglected, but ultimately not selected. It appears the building no longer exists, however.
