I used to be down with the Doc Marten crowd (and still do own a few pairs, admittedly), but I’ve moved on to wearing John Fluevogs now. Twice as stylish as Docs, twice as comfortable, same price more or less.
For a long time, all I would wear were Docs. I love my greasy black 12-eyes(would never wear anything else out to the club) and I wear my brown low-tops to work EVERY day (for the last 2 1/2 years) and I LOVE my Doc sandals. But, I also throw in my calssic black Chucks sometimes as well as my new favorite pair of shoes, some Kenneth Cole black buckle boots. They are primo. Mmmmwwaah!
New Balance 99X. The current model (for men) is the M991GL. (BTW, the lighting in this photo is terrible. This Canadian site has a much better picture.)
They are by far the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn. I love these shoes!
I’m not a runner, but I’ve got narrow, flat feet, and these are designed for overpronators like me. Crappy shoes make my ankles hurt. They are really expensive, but worth it to me. I’ve worn this type of shoe for about 15 years now, and replaced them about every 6-9 months. That’s long enough that I’ve seen the model number cycle all the way from 990 to 999, then restart at 990 again. Now when it’s time for replacement I look for a sale, and stock up. Off sale, they run about $110. (List price is $130! :() I bought three pairs of 990s about 2 years ago for $60 each. Just last week I bought four pairs of 991s, and paid $70 each. (I hadn’t seen them on sale for over a year prior to this, and was starting to panic at the thought of paying full price.)
Ecco are good, but I’m discovering that they’re not quite wide enough for my middle-age-spread feet. I do, however, love my Birks with all my heart. I only by the suede strap, however; the regular leather and nubuck cut in too much (yeah, I only made it to Tenderfoot in Boy Scouts).
And, shock of shocks, I take the narrower width(!).
Oh, for working out, New Balance and only New Balance.
When I have to wear shoes, the most comfortable pair I own are my steel-toe, flight boots that the Navy issued me. Wore them through two pregnancies. Now I only get to wear them on Fridays to work. (I’m barefooted the rest of the time or in flops).
Exactly like my Docs, except mine are the 20-eye that come up to my knees. Absolutely nothing warmer in the winter, especially with Happy-Kneehigh-Toe-Socks :D.
After those, my worn Addidas running shoes; they’ve seen the last of their athletic days, but they are soooooo comfy for mucking around in the art building and whatnot.
Lenora, my bf has a pair of boots from when he was in the Corps at A&M and he swears by them [the combat boots, not the senior boots]. The military certainly takes care of your feet.
Currently, it’s my maroon high-top Chuck Taylors. I also have a great pair of black pointy-toed leather boots with ankle belts for dressing up; I’ve had them for 15 years (give or take), and have had them re-soled 3 times. They’re really a size or a half-size too big for me, but they look so cool!
Since I’m on my feet all day, I’m very picky about what I wear to work. My work shoes are Birkenstock clogs, and they’re a dream.
For swing dancing, though… I’ve got to go with my Bleyers.
Shoes…bane of my life. I have just been into the room next door and counted my shoe rack. 36 pairs, plus 4 pairs of ankle boots.
Imelda, you say? Not one bit. Merely a search for one pair that I can wear which don’t hurt. I think I must have frog feet.
Of the 36, maybe 4 hit the bill. And two of those are boots. The others are trainers - Converse, one size too big. So the rest of them are now heading for the local charity shop.
When I wear shoes (rarely at home - summer or winter) I have a few favorites.
Regular shoes: New Balance, New Balance, New Balance. (And for all you EE, EEE, EEEE people, they come in wides)
Running Shoes: (Don’t laugh people, I used to exercise) New Balance, New Balance, New Balance. By far the best running shoe maker I’ve found. Better than Reebok, Nike, Saucony, Brooks, you name it.
Work Shoes: Hmmmmm… tough call. My brown shoes are Rockports; I don’t really love them. They have nice cushion in the heel of the insole, but after 1/8[sup]th[/sup] of an inch, you get to hard (and I mean hard) rubber. Not comfortable for standing. Also, the soles wear out quickly. Too much $$$ for the name.
My black shoes are SAS. I love them. I can’t say enough about them so I won’t start. I love them.
I got my double H’s with the steel toe and run down heels for everyday use. There is nothing more comfortable once they’re broken in. You can wear them with a suit, or with jeans. They are social chameleons and fit well into all situations.
I got my Rattlesnakeskin boots for when I’m feeling festive.
I got my running shoes.
I got my wingtips for work.
That’s all a man will ever need.
I switch between white Nike sneakers and LL Bean blue/gray hiking boots. No matter what I wear, they come off in the garage. Socks are sufficient for inside the house.
