My first caricature at school- I guess I should be flattered

Today while subbing a group of students were passing around a piece of paper and tittering amongst themselves. Since they were supposed to be working on an assignment I came over and asked them to show me what they were looking at. I had assumed it was some note or some obscene illustration or something, just wanted to get them on-task. I assured them I wouldn’t be mad, just wanted to see why they were making a huge deal. Finally, they handed me the paper.

Drawn on the paper, was a drawing of me. Not in some scene of sexual congress with some equine, not getting horribly mutiliated by laser beams and knives, nope, just a simple drawing of me. They were kind of surprised that I just kind of looked at it and smiled.

Of course, for all I know that was simply the decoy illustration they gave me to distract me from the actual obscene picture they drew of me.

A student once told me that her roommate – who had me in a different section of the same class – did a really good impression of me. Naturally, the next time I saw the roommate, I asked her. Lightning fast reflexes, that kid – she came back immediately with “Impression of you? My impression is that you’re a very nice person.”

Never did find out what the impression consisted of…

Heh. You should post a scan of the drawing and a photo of yourself so we can judge if the kids did a good job or not.

I gotta remember that one.

How old/what grade were the students? And yes, if you kept it, definitely scan it and let us see!

I assume you weren’t subbing for the grammar teacher?

[/snarky grammar police]

Maybe, but I don’t think kids are that smart.

Personally, I think I’d like seeing a caricature of myself, if it wasn’t TOO offensive. I don’t know if that’s actually true, though.

You know, my friends and I mercilessly mocked the wardrobe of my 9th grade biology teacher. I imagine he might have been hurt if he ever heard us. And that would have been really too bad, because in fact I loved him and learned a lot from him, and he remains in my memory one of the best teachers I ever had.

What I’m trying to say is, don’t take it too seriously. Kids can be horrid brats, but it doesn’t mean they don’t like/respect you.
