My greatest influence - an early MMP

That was a very lovely memoir, rosie, thank you for sharing. Isn’t it strange how we always remember those little kindnesses of others, like teaching guitar or sharing beauty tips or whatnot, that seem so trivial at the time? It’s uplifting to look back and remember some of those “little joys”.

Who would my greatest influence be? I honestly have no idea; I never followed any particular role model throughout childhood, nor do I emulate anyone now. I admire my mother’s pragmatism, my Liberal Education professor’s eloquence and unique insight, my dog’s ability to withstand pain in favor of joy, and traits of countless others. I try to incorporate what I look up to in others into my own life (even though most of the time, that doesn’t always work according to plan–but ssh, no-one needs to know that!).

I just accused everybody in the other building of eating garlic sammiches for lunch. Actually it was a bunch of sub sammiches loaded with garlic, onions and all that other good sub sammich stuff. I swear my eyes started to water when I walked in over there.

Let’s all be especially quiet. I have a feeling that MBG

HAS A HANGOVER!!!

Mmm, those are the best kind. Yum.

I’ve been surprisingly productive this morning. I went to the grocery store, swept the floors, washed the dishes, cleaned the kitchen sink and the disposer, and scrubbed the toilet. I really ought to go do laundry this morning, before the laundromat fills up, and the 50 pound washers are full. I need to wash the comforter with cat hornk on it. I hate washing it, because it takes over an hour to dry. Guess I’ll bring my knitting or a good book.

Oh yeah! The kind where you can be outside and people from half a mile away are goin’ sniff what’s that smell? Is somebody eatin’ a garlic sammich?

Jah by all means wash and dry the comforter. Just… ewwwww!

Tigs the next time I see you post it best be to say you’re through with that transcript, young lady! I mean it! Don’t give me that look! Now finish up that work.

Just a drive-by. Sorry! I’m in training classes mon-Wed and still trying to get some work done on breaks and lunch. Aaaaaaah!

Why do I still have to use a ball-mouse? Why, oh why, can the government not buy me either a PS2 optical mouse, or a USB KVM-Switch? I have a USB optical mouse and a PS2 KVM-Swtich, but there is no combination of equipment that will allow me to ditch this god awful ancient piece of technology.

I have spent the last hour constantly fighting this mouse to try and make it go up. This should be a simple task, but not for me it isn’t, it is arduous.

I don’t think I had a chance to mention it last week but it turns out that I do not have to retake the 400 level CS class that I thought I did! Not only does that mean that this semster is going to be so much easier than I thought, and that I will have a whole lot more free time than I expected, but it also means my tuition bill in 1/3 of what I was expecting! And on top of that as long as I pass my internship (i.e. don’t get fired in the next four months) I should be graduating in April!

That happened with my GF. She got a job when in her 40s, having never worked before in her life, at a friend of mine’s bar. He (then)husband laughed and said she was lying. And if she wasn’t lying, she wouldn’t last long. She kept the job for three years, and only left when new owners came in and started the wholesale replacement of the staff. Hang in there - you deserve the big boost this’ll give you.

I managed to survive the weekend with the GF’s sister. She’s actually a lot more mellow than the last time I saw her. Still hates her husband, though.

rosie I can’t think of any one person who was a big influence. My grandfather on my Mom’s side, maybe.

Okay, so grading? Sucks. Sucks like a Hoover on steroids. I suppose I should be grateful I only have 25 students instead of the 32 it could be. I’ve just finished grading all their lab writeups, and after I eat my lunch and waste an appropriate amount of time on the internet I will grade their lab homeworks. Pfui. I did nothing all weekend, because I didn’t have any homework. I should have been grading. Last night my roommate and I watched the Pats/Colts game. Now, we have nothing against the Patriots. We just wanted to see some other teams in the Superbowl for some variety. So by the end of the game we were squarely rooting for the Colts and lemme tell ya it was down to the wire. The Colts managed to pull ahead, and we thought the Pats were going to score, but then there was a game-ending interception. I cheered. I’m such a dork.

Celloface, good news! Enjoy your last semester. Get a mild case of senioritis. Have fun! (It may be your last chance to do so for some time.)

ali, did you check to see if the little roller bars inside need cleaning? Whenever my old mouse started acting up like that, it usually had some kind of smutz on the bars. YMMV.

Oh, I’ve always worked - it’s not like I’m some 50s housewife with no job skills. When my son was born I stayed home for two years, and then went back part-time so I could still be home with the kids when they were off from school.
Now I’m heading off down a different career path, so it’s a bit scary, but I’m looking forward to it.

Yay for the on track graduation CelloDude. That means that soon you’ll have a job so you can help support me in the luxurious retirement I intend to get used to one day.

Let’s just say I had a few difficult moments this morning.

I’m all better now - I have a pot of marinara simmering, I whipped up some garlic butter for the day-old french bread, picked up salad mixin’s and as soon as the Wife makes it in, I’ll drop the pasta and have a nice dinner.

But no wine.

Nope.

Hey Rosie - I set up my own jigzone puzzles. I’m not sure how to share it. Does this link work?

The link works. I did Denim Kitten. There is only one problem - I want to snoogle that kitten!

Great OP, Rosie. I had written a post about my greatest influence (my mom) but I lost my internet connectiion in the middle of it. I may try to write it again when my connection is more reliable. When it isn’t raining. Have I mentioned I hate Knology cable?

I’m waiting on my ride to the Coach’s Show. Catsitting is over with so I can sleep in tomorrow - and I am looking forward to that. I hate mornings. Especially cold, rainy mornings like this one was.

Everything is nice and clean, and the comforter is cat hornk free. My usual laundromat was full to bursting, so I went to the place I use for fluff and fold. It was nice and quiet there, and they have hot water!!!11! The one I usually use, it’s warmish, maybe. So I guess I’ll be using the “new” one from now on.

I managed to get half way through Robin McKinley’s Beauty, one of my favorite all time books. The Amazon reviews used to be full of “she ripped off Disney’s Beauty & the Beast! Wah!” It’s worth noting that Beauty was first published in 1978. I think it’s time to re-read Deerskin, too. I recently bought another copy to replace my tattered original. I have time to re-read The Deed of Paksenarrion and the Honor Harrington series, too. But what will I do next week?

Well, Scruffy survived the day in the crate. She was very happy to see me come home, and now she’s curled up under my feet. Dinner has been et - I tried a poke chop recipe for the first time - definitely a keeper. In fact, I may make the sauce and use it on a pork roast in a crock pot. mmmmmmm

Not a lot else to share. Work was work. When I finsh posting, I’m gonna whip up a batch of chili for my sweetie. Then pack lunches. Oh yeah, wild night at FairyChatEstates.

It’s slushy and ick outside, but we’re supposed to get sun tomorrow, so the last of the slush should melt. I’ve had enough winter - bring on the spring.

Off to the kitchen…

I am so glad my OP was so inspiring. I suppose the other part of the question is does anyone consider you their greatest influence? In my case, an influence, yes. A greatest influence, not likely. But some of my friends at one time or another have told me that they’ve made choices in their lives based on something I’ve said or done. It’s a good feeling.
I wanted to say that both my parents influenced me as well, but neither as greatly as my sister.

**Rebo ** - I will try your puzzles later, I’m at a coworkers 'puter, and I promised I wouldn’t “go” anywhere else while I’m here.

Yay for McCello’s immenant (sp?) graduation.

That’s all for now. I’ll check back in a bit

Any mention of a nummy sauce should include a recipe for said nummy sauce. I thought somebody knew that rule, but apparently not! So, FCM give! We want the sauce recipe! Now! Dangit! Sheesh! Can y’all believe this! :stuck_out_tongue:

Rebo the link works fine, but again, no face pic… I want to rearrange your face so put one up already!

Poor ACBG. He has monitors in this week. I forgot to mention that earlier. So, there’ll be precious little chance of seein’ him. :frowning: I just got back from taking over some pepper steak and rice I made so he can eat it when he gets home. It’s my job this week to make sure he gets fed. I took enough over for a couple meals. Maybe Wednesday or Thursday we can meet up for dinner at that fine dining establishment known as the Three Squares Diner that we like. With any luck the monitors will be gone by Thursday. I know he’ll be exhausted though, poor thing. Everybody now, on the count of three go awww, poor ACBG. Ready? One…Two…Three… AWWWWWWWWWW POOR ACBG!!!

Had enough adult beverages yesterday, did ya MBG
-swampbear (user of too many smilies)

Yay for the graduation news, Al! That sounds truly excellent.

Without having read the MMP, I bought a lottery ticket when I went to buy milk. I buy one maybe twice a year, only when I go to the DairyMart (or whatever it’s called these days) to get milk. MMP-Fest if I win. (Yeah, like that’s likely.)

 Please stop linking to JigZone!!!

Hope you found all your stuff and got settled back in, Puggy.

I so don’t miss grading. Periodically have to do similar tasks at work (evaluate proposals and do performance reviews), but they’re always short-term things with really specific criteria, so they’re somehow less painful. My least favorite things to grade were essays. Yuck.

Reading everyone’s posts made me think of all the people who have influenced me. Mom, definitely, because she raised my brother and me by herself after my Dad died (we were toddlers). She’s sometimes an anti-influence because she’d really like for me to have been a princess with a slew of retainers and a husband to take care of me, but I think that what she actually did (a little bit of everything) influenced me more. To me, it’s much more fun to be in charge of my life and be able to do lots of things on my own. Does that make any sense?

Then there were several teachers along the way, my dad’s mom (I’m ornery like she was), former bosses and colleagues, and several of my former roommates.

I’m home and have continued the laundry. Need to finish reading one more notebook for work; I started it earlier and didn’t finish it. Also need to open my book club book, which I predict I won’t finish for our meeting later this week. (But maybe it’ll be a fast read; it’s not terribly long.)

Guess I should scout out some dinner (which reminds me: hi scout!).

Back later - hi to all I missed.

Stuff I forgot: I second the sauce request, FCM. And, now that I’ve seen **swampy’s ** post: Poooooooor, ACBG.
