My greatest influence - an early MMP

Someone’s a cranky ol’ bear, huh?

OK, this came from my tattered Better Homes and Gardens cookbook - the kind with the red and white checkerboard cover.

1 C chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
2 T cooking oil
¾ C catsup
¼ C lemon juice
3 T sugar ( I didn’t use this)
2T Worcestershire sauce
1 T prepared mustard (I used brown)
1 t salt
¼ t bottled hot pepper sauce
6 poke chops, 1 ¼ - 1 ½ thick

Cook onion and garlic in oil till done but not brown
Stir in remaining ingredients. Simmer 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

According to the recipe, this is to be used for chops on the grill. I put my poke into a baking dish and poured the sauce over it, then covered and baked for 40-ish minutes.

YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

Chili is done. Taking a break before packing lunches.

Is it Friday yet??

I am sitting in the library and I swear I smell pasta cooking somewhere. I guess I’m hungrier than I thought.

Spats, I hate grading as well. But I like grading essays, because then I can write scathing comments and watch my students shrivel up as they read them over. Mwahaha.

I was rather productive today. Finished all my reading for tomorrow and then some. This week is going to be a busy one, so I’m trying to keep ahead. Which means not clicking on any of those evil puzzle links y’all keep posting. I’m not giving in. Nope.

FCM I have one of those cookbooks. Who knew? The sauce sounds like it’d be nummy on any kind of pork.

Dangit Rebo! Do you even have any idea what you’ve probably done with your jigzone puzzles? All these straight male cool kids are gonna take one look at “Serving Wench” and be useless for the rest of the week. All I can say is, I hope you plan on stickin’ in here to take care of 'em. :stuck_out_tongue:

ETA: Y’all a certain [del]old broad[/del] Pottery Goddess is celebrating another bday tomorrow, in case y 'all didn’t know.

Hey, all. I couldn’t get on for the longest time today, so I missed the MMP this morning.

Nice tribute to your sister, anyrose --I’ve lost two sisters (they were twins). I also think of them daily.
#2 son is home with a fever. We watched The Princess Bride and now he is watching the theatrical release of LOTR. And he still has a fever. I called my husband, though, and he is doing sick child duty tomorrow-I must work at the place of more sick people. I really don’t want to use my PTO-I have so little of it and want to take some time off this spring.
I am still not loving the paint in the LR. In the gray, drab light of winter–it’s looking pukey mauvey/grayed-over pink. In lamplight, it’s quite a pretty buff color-but the pink undertones really come out in daylight. It’s better with pics up, but…Oh, well-it stays this way for awhile.

My biggest influence? I don’t know–I would have to think hard about that. I know of several people who were influences, but not THE biggest one. I count an English teacher and a US history teacher as in the top 5.

Off to class now. Ciao!

it worked but there are memory issues in the Mac - but that is definitely one snugglyable kitten

Ooh, FCM, that reminds me. I am looking for a good recipe site. I have never really cooked before, but now that I am in my own place (and I am looking for way to save money) I thought I would give it a try, but I have no idea where to start. So if anyone has a link with some good recipes (hopefully something a beginner could handle) that would be great (bonus points for sites with vegetarian entrees).

Well, I’ve found out where the rest of my money is, and I can’t have it until I have a PIN. I never needed the PIN before, because I always did everything online, but now the website says that I have to do it over the phone. So, I have to wait 7 - 10 business days for the PIN, and then another 5 -7 business days for the $$$. I can make it that long. It will be a bit tight, but it’s doable. Or I could try to pick up a short term assignment for a couple of weeks to tide me over. Problem is, short term assignments have a way of turning into long term assignments. Maybe I’ll call a couple of agencies tomorrow and see if I can come in for interviews. Blah. Typing tests, Excel tests, tests of everything testable. Bleck. I wanted more than a week off!

Well, Al, this is one of my favorite sites. There’s a huge variety available with just about any search. You can also automatically adjust the recipe for the number of servings you want, although it doesn’t change the amounts actually called out in the recipe, so you need to be aware of that.

This Christmas, I gave my niece one called “How to Boil Water” - it’s a cookbook for total newbie cooks. I think I got it on Amazon.

And if I may offer one other thing - always follow the recipe exactly when you’re starting out. Once you know what you’re doing, you can start to get creative.

Good luck!

I bet that recipe tastes fantastic, FCM. It reminds me of a sauce recipe my mom uses for some of our holiday party mix, and 'tis absolutely delicious. anxiously waits eleven months for the return of amazing Christmastime delicacies

I second Ali; if anyone has some websites featuring good (vegetarian?) recipes, they would be much appreciated by me. To give an accurate indication of my cooking repertroire, today I bought some spaghetti and pasta sauce, but won’t be making it for dinner tonight, as I’m waiting for a friend who’s going to show me how to cook it properly. Heh.

scurries off to attempt to make some mac-n-cheese

Ah! Didn’t see your previous, post, FCM. Thanks for the site, it looks immensely helpful.

It won’t hurt to let them know you’re out there, Jahdra. You never know, the perfect assignment for you might be out there tomorrow. (Sez GT who was assigned as a temp on a Friday the 13th to the employer where she has now worked for going on - eeeeeeeeeep - 17 years.)

I have a bunch of food-related bookmarks, CelloGuy and meli. I’ll paste a few in after a while. (Allrecipes was on my list too…) Also, there are several very good vegetarian and general-purpose cookbooks (list to follow). You might try borrowing a couple from a library and see what you like.

Guess I’ll go pull stuff out of the dryer.

GT

FCM gave an excellent source for recipes. I would also recommend going to the food network site. Some of their stuff is a little off the wall, but one can find all kinds of recipes from easy to iron chef and there are vegetarian recipes there, too. Know what? Cooking ain’t that hard. It’s surprising how easy a lot of stuff is when ya just get in there and do it. Soon, you’ll be in there tweaking recipes to your taste and even creating stuff on your own just like a pro. Heh. So much of the stuff I cook these days, I don’t even worry about the original recipe, though as [del]the old broad[/del] FCM said, in the beginning, do follow the recipes until you get a feel for what you want to do with 'em.

Jah I’ll second what gt said… never hurts to put yourself out there. Of course all us cool kids know you’ll land on both feet in that perfect job. We’re pullin’ for ya!

ETA: Now just why would the google ads be all about police and criminal record searches. Just what have you all been up to?

someone just shared this video with me, so I am sharing it with you. It’s SFW, but your resulting laughter may not be.

BWWWAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAA!!! Now that’s funny rosie! This is sooooooo gonna be shared!

Thanks, **gt ** & swampy. I know you’re right, my last job started as a temp assignment on Christmas Eve, 1999. I didn’t want to take that one, either, because, come on, Christmas Eve? I’d already told my family I’d be there at noon. So yeah, I’m being stubborn. I’ll finish polishing my resume tonight and start making calls tomorrow. Can’t hurt anything. Er, wait. I don’t have appropriate interview wear. My suits are long gone, and I’ve been needing new black shoes for a while. Groan. Once rush hour’s over, I’ll be heading out shopping. Pantyhose! Heels! Suits! Typing tests! Interviews! Oh, joy.

Good evening everyone. I am mentally drained. Work has just been crazy and I don’t see it letting up anytime soon.

Jah, I know you’ll find just the right job soon.

Drae, haven’t seen much of you. How are things going for you?

Dinner tonight will be the leftover pot roast and stuff. Hey, it’s easy and I don’t feel like putting much effort into cooking tonight.

Apparently, everyone is tired. I came home to find my 17 year old daughter crashed on our big snuggler chair. The hubby had his little nap in his computer chair too. I wanna nap, dammit. I get home too late for that though.

As almost always, there is nothing exciting going on around the Taters place. The weather is back to normal for the PNW, and I’m loving it. Y’all can keep your snow and ice, thank you very much.

I guess I should get going on dinner. I’m not even hungry to tell you the truth, but Mr. Taters and the kids are.

Hope everyone is starting to feel back up to snuff.

TTFN.

That’s great, rosie. I can totally see that happening.
Everyone, welcome Quazi Daughter. She just signed up, and will be posting as soon as she figures out how. Greet her with enthusiasm.

I’m not saying Happy Birthday to FCM until tomorrow.
Oh, I read the new Calvin Trillin book, About Alice today. It’s very sweet. Loving, and not saccharine at all.

Welcome Quazi Daughter! Come on in! The water is fine! We’re a nice bunch of folks.

Dinner has been eaten, and I’m in the queue to WoW it up.

That’s all I’ve got for now. I’m so mundane.

Welcome, Quazi Daughter!

My shopping expedition was unsuccessful, probably because I was grumpy. I have decided to get up at a normal hour tomorrow, and hit the malls, both strip and ::shudder:: Westfield Shoppingtowns. I may even venture up to Newark. Now that’s desperation!

I have discovered in writing my resume that I am much better at playing up my strong points than I used to be.

And, even more mundane and pointless: Keisha has started using her kitty bed! I tried to take her picture, but she objected, and refused to allow pictorial proof of her cuteness.

Ooh, Quazi Daughter has arrived! YAY! throws confetti We’ve heard so much about you. evil grin

Let’s see. Your nickname will be … Quaz. (And QD, of course.) The Spats has spoken.
