It’s way less complicated than some of you are trying to make it. When the whole Skald debacle happened, some good changes were made. It resulted in a new rule that got evenly enforced when he tried to be cute and skirt the new rule. The result: no more surprise rape incest porn dropped into posts with no warning. A net positive.
All people have asked for is some mod action against the worst offenders in the rape apologist camp. At the very least, Starving Artist should have a topic ban. How many more threads is he going to be allowed to derail with his shtick? He has openly admitted to trolling. He loves it. He’ll never stop. He knows it gets under people’s skin, that’s why he does it and will continue to do so unless some action is taken.
For the most part, I think it’s safe to say that’s all people really want. Skald wasn’t run out of town with torches and pitchforks (although his reputation has taken a hit). No one has asked for safe spaces or wants to limit the conversation in any way. We just want the trolls dealt with, and modding as needed in threads where sexism/misogyny could be an issue. Doesn’t seem too complicated to me.
Otherwise, this topic is going to keep getting raised over and over - this is what, our third go-round so far this year alone?
to AHunter3 - I know gender issues are a topic that’s close to your heart, but please don’t let him derail the thread.
So women have some intrinsic difference of thought? How about a panel of men for comments that are misandrist? I’m not sure if people really think about the implications of what they write if their principles were truly general instead of narrowly written and constrained to achieve a desired outcome.
How many threads have there been, just this past year, about misogyny and how to combat it? And the ones I read all went on for pages and pages, and not all of that was trolling/complaining about trolling.
Pretty much at the root of all the threads were people, male and female, asking that the people in charge DO SOMETHING to show they understand there is a problem, and that they’re trying to fix it. Change the rules. Or more actively enforce the existing ones. Or more warnings. Or ban the serial offenders. Or topic bans. How about simply cornfielding the offensive posts, in the spirit of attacking the post and not the poster?
But after all those discussions, what has been the result?
Well, I’ve seen occasional posts referring to mysterious discussions being held in the secrecy of a Moderator only subboard.
And that’s it. Not one thing has changed. It’s not just that no change has succeeded in ameliorating the problem, it’s that nothing has even been tried!
(Or am I wrong? Can someone point to anything the moderators have done? Or tried to do?)
Is there any point to this? How long are we supposed to beat our heads against this wall before we simply give up and go away?
Because the rightness nor wrongness of a topic or a suggestion has very little if any correlation with gender. The merits of an idea should be considered not the biological properties of the proponent.
Here’s one! I spotted it! Do I flounce off, rage off, announce HEY MODERATORS LOOK WHAT I FOUND, A MISOGYNIST HATEFUL JERK THREAD DERAILING POST (poster, to be more accurate).
I just want some guidance here. Because really, I feel so out of options. I’d like to stick around, but when there are posters like this in every fucking thread anywhere near the subject, why bother? I am very much on the cusp of leaving.
Wait? I’m a misogynist, hateful, and a jerk because I’m discussing the implications of an all women panel in a thread where that was the suggestion in the OP? Ignoring the fact that we aren’t in the Pit, do you have any argument as to why your insults are actually true?
Now watch this post be labeled as further “proof” of these insults. It’s a sad, sad, sad catch-22. But it’s actually a tactic far more common then it should be.
Yup. This attempt on octopus’s part to derail this thread is emblematic of his, and others’, attempts to derail other threads. It’d be lovely if they’d get one chance to knock it off, and then start collecting consequences.
Discussing the topic is not derailing. Insulting me is derailing. Not being accurate with the contents of my post is derailing. Discussing the actual topic is not derailing.
Is the only allowed discussion on a topic sentiments which are in 100% congruence?
And you still cannot address the actual on topic posts I make with anything other than insults. Try engaging with ideas instead of insulting other posters. You might have a productive conversation. That is if that’s the goal. If the goal is to enforce conformity of thought with threats of flouncing and depriving the SD of a few cents of advertising money, well, keep on keeping on and good luck.
You do have a tendency to attack anyone posting on this topic and you do come off as attempting to derail pretty much every discussion on this topic.
Either get on board with the fact that there is a misogyny problem on the SDMB (and there isn’t a misandry problem), or stop posting in ATMB. So in that respect, yes, you need 100% congruence on accepting that there is a misogyny issue here that needs to be resolved.
My fear is that the rule change wouldn’t fix it either. The just asking qurpestiin crowd also love testing the rules. Their misogyny is their defining characteristics.
So just be arbitrary. Topic bans for certain posters (I’m sure there would be no problem compiling a list) and if they don’t like it, let them leave, or sock up and then get perma-banned. Misogyny is not a political issue that needs a fair hearing, it’s repression and hate that we can do without.
You can “fair” this board to death, it’s happening before our eyes. This isn’t a country with rule of law, it’s a privately owned message board. The authorities here are not answerable except to the owners. Let them exercise some arbitrary authority in these areas, and we can move on.
Would this be good for the future of the board? I don’t know. If I were considering joining here and found out that special measures have been taken to curb open expression of misogyny, it would draw me in rather than push me away.
Yeah, what he said. The main rule of the SDMB is “don’t be a jerk”. Obviously this is a rule that’s open to interpretation as one person’s idea of a jerk may not be another’s. But you’re never going to make everyone happy, and in the end you just have to make a decision and stick with it. We’ve got two posters right now who are derailing thread after thread over several forums, and they’ve been doing it for months. One for years. And it’s always only in the rape/sexism/misogyny related threads that they do it. They’re actively making rape apologists part of the board’s culture. If that’s not being a jerk, I don’t know what is. Then we get half a dozen threads going that are essentially about the same issue, things die down, then something makes it pop back up. This is our 3rd go round so far this year, and it’ll keep happening unless you hand out some consequences already.
