My move to the retirement facility (If joining the thread late, at least skim the first few posts)

But one says 1202-2 (1202 is apt #), and the other one says 1202-3. I do not see that type of connector that says 1202-1.

I probably will at the end. I’m big on rituals and stuff like that.

The fact that you need to dial a “9” for an outside call tells me that the facility probably has its own PBX (Private Branch Exchange) installed. If so, then it’s a simple matter to enable and/or disable any port that’s connected to the PBX switch. If you need the 1202-3 port to work, you probably need to contact the facilities manager or IT person.

Do you know what your landline number is? When I worked with a PBX system, we had a several ‘blocks’ of numbers, and our telecom person would assign a number to a port. (A block of numbers is something like 555-1200 through 555-1299.) You might call your cell phone from your landline to see what number pops up as the calling party.

As to why there is no 1202-1 port in your apartment, I got nuthin’.

What’s the thing on the left with the green light ?

No, I don’t.

I already knew the number, and this confirmed it.

All the wi-fi connections here have the exact same format for the login, the only change being the apartment number. I’m pretty sure I could change mine, but I’m not confident about it. Seems like anybody could easily get in.

As I read your posts about what this apartment and community are like, I’m getting a little jealous. It sounds really lovely!

Late to the party, but have found your situation very interesting (and intriguing) reading. Re the internet and Spectrum. The place probably has somebody in maintenance who could help you physically install stuff. The local Spectrum store will give you whatever components are needed to get everything in running order and also give you written instructions (maybe verbal ones too) on how to set things up. The internet box should also have a connection for your landline phone which is really easy to set up. The only trouble is that if the power goes out, the phone connection also goes out. But if you have another phone, no problem.

Catwise, while at the vet’s place being boarded, leave yourself time to get settled in before bringing them to the new place. If they have chips, be sure to have a change of address. If no chips, get them implanted at this time. Since they seem to have collars, make sure the information is up to date on them.

As far as the wayward kitty, if something happens and she escapes before the move and you can’t catch her in time, don’t despair. Since you have all the extra time, you will have ample opportunity to get her after the move. She considers this her home, so she will stick around. Leave food out, and after all the commotion is over, you can go over to the house, leave the door open, offer food inside, and coax her in. She will be hungry and very happy to see you at that point.

The apartment and the community sounds like fun. Enjoy. And everything will work out in the end.

I believe Gnoitall is going to be correct. And that if you buy it from Spectrum they’ll try to sell a premium option, but thankfully, coax is darn cheap online, so once you measure out the length(s) you need, I doubt you’ll be out more than $20-30 tops.

I would hope that with the excellent example of your handy-service on the weekend, that someone will be able to assist you in the set up, but based on my prior experience of your future-proofing your blackberry, I’m rather confident that you would be able to follow Spectrum’s set up guide, and if not, we’ll all help you puzzle it out otherwise.

Back to the house-panther overlords. Despite a love of tech, I also like KISS solutions for redundancy. I have my cats chipped, but that only helps if they’re picked up by the professionals as it were. My cats have Kitty Convict Style breakaway collars with their names and our phone number embroidered in it.

They’re housecats, so it’s just in case the squeeze out, and I don’t know if your kittehs would tolerate the easily removed (well, comparatively) break free collars, and for that matter, you may well have a labeled tag on the collar that I can’t make out in the earlier picture!

But it’s another step to get them back to you sooner, especially if they’re only loose inside the community. And a collar with your new apartment number as well as the phone number is probably do-able ( different brands have different character max) - so may be a good idea regardless.

As a quick fix, at least: many collars can be written on with an indelible marker; at least well enough for name, apartment number, and phone number. Getting that info woven into the collar looks neater and won’t need re-doing occasionally, but generally takes some time. ETA: getting them chipped while they’re being boarded might indeed be a good idea.

I buy breakaway cat collars and name tags from amazon by the gross. I always have a dozen ready to go so anytime someone comes in without a collar she gets a new one immediately. The tag has my name, phone number, “has microchip” and “reward.”

The Executive Director has taken on the mission of solving my problems-- really confidence-inspiring. He gave me a new key that also didn’t work, so he brought up another one to the apt, and that one does work. Yay! While he was here he noted the light in the tree and how it is aimed right in my window. Said he’d get somebody right on it. Nice.

Well, I expected you to be prepared (thus my comment about may already have a tag I can’t see!) so no worries. Just trying to think of other ways to improve things. As such, you can also get Airtag (and I believe non-Apple equivalents) holders for collars! Here’s a list of Android equivalents (Tile being the one I hear about the most but I don’t use any of the above right now)

And I’m very happy that the staff is making this personal in the best way possible, actual concern about your needs rather than just a casual effort. Speaks well for your future at the new place, which will hopefully be a new home in short order.

I know! I think all Dopers should plan to move there as the need arises.
And then we take over. Mua-ha-ha!

Perhaps add that to the next poll/thread about winning $1 billion - not just buying the SDMB, but building an IRL residence complete with staff for members.

:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Time to revive this?

I can just imagine hot dog night - “Who brought this ketchup in here!?!?”

Considering the sheer number of foodies in CS, any ‘hot dog night’ is going to be mostly bespoke local sausages, hand crafted, or imported options. At which point, ketchup will likely not be an issue, and even if so, most of the ketchup haters grudgingly gave allowance for home-made ketchups made with good ingredients, instead of overly sweet crap in which the tomatoes are utterly drowned out!

Brief Interlude:
Tikva and EC having a meaningful encounter through a wall of… wait for it… bubble wrap. They sat like this, staring at each other, for about five minutes.

Sorry for the blurry picture. It was very early this morning. I’m going to keep EC in her Birds Be Safe collars even though she’ll never be near a bird ever again  . I’ve gotten so used to seeing her in it, that when I take it off (so she can groom her neck), she looks naked.

We were lucky to have a very experienced in-house maintenance guy who had been here for 20 years. He was able to un-fuck the TV cable issues so that we could set up in the living room instead of the tiny second bedroom. For serious problems, they have a standing contract with the local cable people. We decided against another landline. Our old one was mainly a magnet for spam calls, and just a nuisance. He also came in and did some modifications that we wanted, like removing unnecessary closet doors, etc.

Your cats are calico and black? Mine are tortoiseshell and black, and the tortie is the one who will dash out the door if it’s opened by an unwary person.
