That aside - all the best for your new life!
Was that warning accompanied by a cat ‘drawing’ for you?
It was for me.
I did test negative this morning-- yay! Hope it sticks.
Seriously?? Well, EC was scantily clad in only her clown collar…
What does that mean?
The living room will feel less crowded once you’re used to it.
Or if it doesn’t, you’ve got all the time you want to decide what to remove from it. It looks quite functional, and rather comfy, as it is.
– the first photo does contain a furry wearing only a collar!
Yeehah! all the bad stuff is over with, covid included!
May the body in the library continue to be missing!
(Wait a minute. That’s a mystery story title: The Missing Body in the Library.)
Which is now today. Hope that you are resting, comfortably full of breakfast and with lunch provided for. – did you get good sleep last night? one or more cats on bed? but even if not: you know that they’re there and that they’re safe.
That is freakin’ hilarious!
@thorny_locust Tikva did sleep with me but she was very restless. It took her forever to settle down. Don’t know where EC slept. My fitbit gave me an 81 sleep score. Anything over 80 is good. I’ve been getting in the 60s. I’m going to take a nap now.
Your flat looks very comfy. A good cat window there.
When my mother moved to a similar facility, she told me the same thing.
But after only a few weeks, I noticed that she started to phrase it differently:
“We have the full breakfast…”
Mazel Tov on your move…you’re starting a new, and good, phase of life.
With indoor cats who don’t get lost.
Your living room looks very cozy to me! And you even have flowers in a vase, which makes it look like a real home (along with the cats, of course). Congratulations on making this move with such grace even under the really stressful circumstances!
It was the cat. It’s always the cat. One of my cats has the nickname trippin’ kitty, and it’s not because of her love of catnip.
But seriously, an absence of murder mysteries on site notwithstanding, glad to see some of the upsides coming to the fore. And that the cats while not 100% satisfied yet, are meeting you halfway by all accounts. So here’s to long naps, slowly setting in, and just a bit of pampering. Or a lot!
The flowers in vases are all artificial. I’ve had those poppies in the picture for at least 30 years.
But they’re decoration. You just moved in a day ago, and you already have interior design!
Our cat was primarily an indoor cat in Portland, but we would let her outside when we were out there keeping an eye on her. It was clear that she loved being out where she could explore her territory, roll on the warm concrete walk, and hide in the bushes to watch the world go by. There is no such option here, and I’m sure her kitty brain is unable to understand and that she would love outdoor time.
Wow. Never realized that.
Yes. Everybody brings more than fits well. There is wisdom in recognizing you don’t need seating for 12; that’s what the various public areas are for. Soon enough you will see which pieces are unnecessary and send them to their next owner.
No, that should be The Missing Body Not in the Library.
My fitbit gave me an 81 sleep score. Anything over 80 is good. I’ve been getting in the 60s. I’m going to take a nap now.
That makes me so happy for you. Sleep is so basic, and yet so many of us can’t / won’t get it in good quantity and quality. Go you!!!
Tested negative again this morning! Yay! One more negative test and I’ll be fit for human consumption er, association again.
Which reminds me! Does the Cisco WiFi system in the room have ethernet ports on the bottom? I’m curious, because a wired connection is generally less error prone for things like smart tvs and the like.
To answer your question from (was it only??) two days ago: yes, there are openings on the underside of the box on the left. Took the fuzzy pic with my phone as there is a piece of furniture in the way.
Are you saying that in addition to the cable connection, I should connect my TV with an ethernet cable to one of those ports? Are all those ports the same? Which connection on the TV should I use? Do not need to know right away. I’m not planning on dealing with Spectrum until next week. More urgent fish to fry around here.
I’m tempted to take the three boxes of who knows what? in the kitchen to the dumpster or Goodwill without even unwrapping what’s in them! Where did all this crap come from??? Did people sneak it into the house at night while I was asleep?? I know: CATS! The cats did internet shopping on the nights I didn’t turn my computer off! That’s got to be it.
Of course, there’s no rush to get everything put away and/or disposed of. I have nowhere to be. At all. The only urgency is me pushing myself, which isn’t necessary. I feel like I’m uncoiling– like the tightly wound spring that I’ve been for the last month is letting go a bit. Remember in The Odd Couple how Oscar told Felix that he had “clenched hair”? Well, my hair is un-clenching.
Full disclosure: I’m not pining away for my house today. I’m feeling good about being here. I feel immensely relieved to be able to say that. This place is-- the best word is compact. Not that my 1,100 sq ft Craftsman was a sprawling mansion, but this is more like being on a little boat where everything has to have a function and has to fit. With all the windows, my house looked to and referenced the outside all day every day. I’m removed from the outside world here on the second floor, but I have a lovely view from my living room, which thank God!, faces east. I also have a south-facing window in the den that allows light to pour in from that direction. As we move toward winter, more and more sunlight will come in from the south.
In summary: this had to happen. I didn’t want it. It was forced on me. I would not have made the move at this time of my own free will. But it was going to happen some day, and better now while I’m able-bodied and in my (mostly) right mind.
I’m very glad to be out of a relationship with a landlord. I have great faith in the organization that runs The Home. I worked for them for several years about 20 years ago writing grant proposals, and I know (and can recite) their philosophy and mission. They are a 50+ year-old, faith-based non-profit, not a profit-driven business. I moved my mother from San Diego into their assisted living unit for the last two years of her life, and I got to see in action what I was writing proposals and articles about. Another friend of mine was in the nursing home unit toward the end of his life (I adopted his two cats when he died). Unlike many facilities of this type, they will not kick you out if you run out of money. They have a fund (which is one of the things I sought grants for) to support people who outlive their money. (One of my friends-- also a former grant-writing client-- who lives here is drawing from that fund.) The organization rings true at every level from every direction. More so than my tin-plated landlord. Meow…
(If you decide to research and manage to locate the name of the facility, I’ll confirm in a PM. But please don’t post the info here.)
Thank you again, friends, for the hand-holding and encouragement. I can’t express how much it has helped and how meaningful it has been.
And thanks for reading my long posts.
LEARN FROM ME: Start clearing out your crap now! Minimize recreational shopping. Throw something away every day. You don’t have to go all Marie-Kondo, just be aware of things piling up in those closets and cubby holes.
More later. The saga continues…
Are you saying that in addition to the cable connection, I should connect my TV with an ethernet cable to one of those ports?
The cable connection on the TV is just that: it’s how the TV is connected to your cable provider. I’m sure you’ve told us this, but is your TV a ‘smart’ TV? IOW, do you have NetFlix or Hulu or other streaming services enabled on your TV? If so, you are probably connecting your TV via your Wi-fi. If that’s working okay, then, IMO, there’s no need to connect your TV via an ethernet cable to this device.
Connection via ethernet cable will give a faster, more reliable connection to the internet than Wi-fi, but I’ve found, from personal experience, that it makes little difference when I’m watch NetFlix or Amazon Prime TV. If your streaming service(s) always connect and there’s very little buffering, I wouldn’t worry about an ethernet connection.
Others, of course, may have a different opinion!
There is wisdom in recognizing you don’t need seating for 12; that’s what the various public areas are for.
Sadly, wife’s opinion usually overrides mine. We have a table that seats six and it’s much too large for the so-called dining area of this apartment, even with the leaf not in it. Now, we have filled it on a couple of occasions, but it seems to me that a table for four and a couple of TV trays would work just as well.

I fully endorse this, but again am often overruled, which is why we still have six full bookcases. I was at least able to put my foot down on record albums, as I had the foresight to burn most of them to iTunes. I also prevailed in donating all business attire (much of which hasn’t been a good fit in at least 10 years) to a local transition shelter. There must have been at least four trash bags full of t-shirts that either no longer fit or hadn’t been worn in 20 years. We no longer buy souvenir crap. I’ve not prevailed in my desire to get rid of a book any time a new book comes through the door, so we continue to amass literature that won’t be read a second time. I pretty much exclusively read on my Kindle.
Both my TVs are smart Roku TVs. Right now I’m connecting wirelessly with my T-Mobile Gateway (which is the ever-lovin’ BOMB!). I get lots of streaming channels, but no local TV because I don’t want to bother hooking up my antenna, since free cable is in the offing.
Once I get the cable box from Spectrum and connect the cable from the box on the wall to the TV, what will also connecting an ethernet cable to the box do for my TV?
