My mp3 player won't connect to my computer - help appreciated

Hi y’all - my creative zen m vision (30g) has suddenly decided it no longer wishes to be friends with my computer. Usually it is connected to my computer via a USB connector but recently (within the last two weeks or so) it has suddenly stopped recognising that the MP3 player is attached when it’s plugged in. I’ve checked the USB ports I’m using with other devices and they work so it’s not the ports themselves that are the problem.

What’s strange about it is that my computer makes an approximation of the noise it should do when a USB device is attached (the dong-ding sound), but makes the normal sound when it is disconnected (ding dong). So my computer is recognising that something is being attached/detached but won’t actually recognise that my MP3 player is connected or allow me to transfer data. Also, the same connector is used to charge the player and it’s charging fine, so I’m not sure it’s a problem with the connector itself.

I’ve checked the creative website for support but couldn’t find anything on this, and obviously it’s not possible to update firmware on the MP3 player if it’s not actually connecting to my computer at all. So, any nuggets of wisdom that people may have would be greatly appreciated.

Check under control panel->system->hardware->device manager. Look for a USB device with a yellow question mark by it. If you see one, right click, and choose Update Driver.

Which OS are you using, btw?

Windows XP with service pack 2. Thanks for the tip - got a similar one from creative’s support people, will see if it works later today.
