My new kitten needs a name

I like Paka and Popoki, also. It may wind up being one or the other, but I’m hoping more people can come in with more languages. For instance, I remember hearing an interesting sounding one that was, I think, Apache. Sadly, I don’t remember what it was. I remember I liked it a lot.

As for pictures, I don’t have too many yet. I took a few last night, but he was pretty busy exploring his new home so they’re kinda fuzzy. I believe I’ve fixed this so anyone can see Lil’ No Name. Koshka, my kitty I had to put to sleep in February (stomach cancer :frowning: ) can be seen here. And Neko, who is not taking the new arrival too well, can be seen here. I do have lots more pictures of both Koshka and Neko, but these are the only digital ones I have.

Aww! What a pretty little stripped sweetheart you have! Neko’s also gorgeous.

I’m not a linguist so I don’t have any suggestions. The word koshka always makes me smile because that’s what my Russian next door neighbor’s biligual child shouts when he sees my female cat. For some reason he reserves the word cat for our male kitty.

Hm. I think he should be named “pissed”.
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww… sigh, makes me miss my dog back home… :frowning:

He was just blinking at the flash. So far he seems to be a very amiable cat, and he’s definitely affectionate. A couple hours ago he was licking my toeses!

Simba!

In Malay, its kucing.

Abenaki: pezois pr minowis (hmmm, wonder if that second one is a cognate of “meow”)

Apache: gidi

Cherokee: wesa

Cheyenne: poeso (you can hear it by clicking on the word after entering “cat” onto the search box and getting a list of suggestions here)

You may find other candidates by clicking on some of the many links provided on this page.

Consults Lonely Planet Phrasebooks

Tibetan: Shi-mi; with the ‘i’ pronounced as it would be in ‘in’

Nepali: Bi-rah-lo ;with the ‘bi’ pronounced like ‘bee’

Gorbeh - Farsi (Cat)
Pishi /pEsh-E/- Farsi (Kitty)

In Finnish cat is Kissa (pronounced KEESE-ah) and kitten is just Pikku Kissa (PEEK koo KEESE ah)

As someone’s already pointed out, “cat” in Indonesian / Malay is kucing, but you need to know that the c is pronounced ch, so it’s like kuching.

In Arabic, try hirr (like “her” but roll the r).

Eve, I love this idea, and if I’d been drinking something it probably would have exploded all over the screen. It’s not the name I’m looking for, though. I don’t think he has enough brain power to live up to his namesake!

Right now he’s in my shit book, 'cuase he bit my lip this morning (fang on the outside, lower tooth on the inside, and yeah, it drew blood on the outside). Ouch!!

(It’s a good thing he’s cute, affectionate, and only 9 weeks old.)

I read in a National Geographic that ancient Egyptian for “cat” was [pronounced] “miu”. (Ain’t that just perfect?)

DAMN YOU!

Ya beat me to the Swahili!

Good name, though.
