My new novel is out! (Urban fantasy, #1 in the series)

I don’t dislike the cover, it just doesn’t grab me. I wasn’t intending to be a jerk.

The picture doesn’t make me think of a college professor. My first thought was angsty-teen, but I remember reading elsewhere what you were working on. I think for people who do cover browse, it will probably blend in with a lot of other urban fantasy.

I’m an older guy so don’t think of me as any sort of litmus.

I really do expect to enjoy the book, it references many elements I like.

Yeah, I hear you. I do like the cover a lot–the graphic artist I used does a lot of work on urban fantasy/fantasy/sci-fi, so I left a lot of the elements up to him. We have been going round and round about the character, though–I completely agree with you that he looks too young, and we’re either going to fix that on the subsequent books (which take place beginning four years after this one, so Stone is in his mid 30s) or we’re going with more of a silhouette instead of a head-on shot. The problem, he’s told me, is that he has to work with the images he has available (I can’t afford a photoshoot with a real model for a self-pubbed book, though I am getting very tempted to try). He keeps sending me faces and they keep being too young. So I lived with it for Book 1 because the look is mostly right, just 10 years early.

It’s funny–one of my favorite cover artists (Daniel Dos Santos) just posted a cover he did for another book yesterday, and the guy he used as a model would be pretty close to perfect for Stone’s face. I know I can’t afford Mr. Dos Santos, but I sure would love to use his model…

Here’s the cover I’m talking about.

okay, I lol’ed after a confused second

Enjoyed reading this book, will definitely look out for rest of series

So glad you enjoyed it! The next one will be out sometime in early summer, if all goes well.

Would you be willing to leave me a review for this one on Amazon? I’d really appreciate it!

Weird question, but did you choose RL King as your name to appear on your book because, like JK Rowling, you felt a female name in front of a book that’s not a romance novel may repel buyers?

Not really…maybe a little bit. It was mainly because I’ve never really liked my first name, so I tend to go by my initials a lot. I suppose I could have used a pen name, but I never came up with one that resonated with me. Besides, I’m proud of my work so I at least want some form of my real name on it.

I read this thread when it was first posted, and thought your book sounded like something I might enjoy, so I went to Amazon and downloaded a free sample (I love those free samples). Well, today I finally got around to reading the sample, and I just bought the whole book. I can’t wait to see what’s going on with Adelaide’s house.

Cool, hope you like it!

I just picked it up and I will give it a try

Reading it now, about halfway through. (I read slowly.) Enjoying MUCH! I’ll be putting up a happy review on Amazon.

I really enjoy your main protagonist, and the secondary protagonist is mighty cool also. Good characterization throughout. Keep up the good work!

Woot! Thanks

I’m really happy with the sales for this thing - they’re going quite briskly! (Well, at least for me they are.) I’m sitting at 3,672 on Kindle Paid Titles, which I’m told is pretty darn good! I’m eternally grateful to my fellow local indie author who told me that I would simply have to suck it up and get with the Twitter if I wanted to make sales. I was skeptical at first (I’m an old fart who views Twitter as that thing where the kids post pictures of their lunches) but damned if it didn’t work! The day after I started tweeting (and not just about my book–though I made sure to include my book information in my profile), sales shot up!

Thanks to the Dopers who’ve left kind reviews, and to all who’ve bought the book! Here’s hoping my little sales boom lasts a while–at least until I get the next one out.

PM me if you would like to mail me a paper copy for a review. Amazon calls me a “Top” reviewer. It might help- or not.

Just a note: I am reading this now and enjoying it.

So glad to hear you’re enjoying it! If you’d consider leaving me a review on Amazon when you finish I’d be most grateful, but I’m just happy to hear when readers like the book.

I will be glad to review it.

i finished your book. I really enjoyed it and look forward to more. You have two other titles on Amazon that are unavailable. Any chance they will be reissued?

I left you a good review. Count me as a fan!

Thank you so much! I will check it out momentarily!

Here’s the story with the other two: I wrote them a couple of years back, thinking that I had a trilogy. When I finished the second one, I realized what I had was a series. So I pulled them down and have retooled them to fit with the series, as well as sending them to my pro editor and having new covers done for them.

So the answer to your question is, yes they will be reissued, in revised and updated and professionally edited format. Forgotten (book 2 of the series) will be out in May or June, and Threshold (book 3) will be out probably in the fall, depending on how fast my editor gets through it.

There are two more books currently finished in the series (for a total of 5), I’m 80,000 words into another one, and I have ideas for at least four more. So the series will hopefully continue for quite some time.

Thanks again!

I have followed you on Amazon.
