Morning. I’m not much of a boat person, but we did go out on a river with some friends a couple months ago and it was fun. I think the difference from previous boating experiences was that this was slow and lazy where in the past it has always been about going as fast as possible, which tends to result in me not feeling so good. But slow and lazy is actually fun!
Good weekend. The weather was gorgeous on Saturday. We wandered around and took pictures of the fall foliage. If I have a chance, I’ll post some later. Yesterday we went out for seafood at this place that’s in a park where you order inside and then eat outside. They’re only open April-October so we had to go again before they close of the season! Crabcakes. YUM!
Now back to work. We don’t get a long weekend. ::sigh:: But one of my coworkers is back from a week’s vacation, and she’s engaged! They went to Boston and were there for a couple days, and her now-fiance surprised her with a midweek trip from Boston to San Diego so they got to watch the sun rise on the east coast and the sun set on the west coast. They went kayaking and then he proposed on the beach. So romantic!
taxi, if you like slow, you’ll love sailing! In our boat, the screamin’-est fast speed is something like 7 knots - that’s less than 10mph. Sailing is very relaxing as long as you don’t have to be someplace at a certain time. There’s something about freeing yourself to the whims of the wind.
Still haven’t accomplished anything since coming home. But I’m going now to make lunch and do some kitchen stuff. No, really. I am.
Nice OP, Mooooooom. Seems like any tradeshow I go to lately has a bunch of booths that have nothing to do with the topic at hand… the Vegetarian Food Fair had a smoothie-maker booth (kind of related, I suppose, unless you plan on making bacon smoothies or something) and the Clothing Show had a wide assortment of weirdo vendors like dog/cat beds, aromatherapy lotions, and a palm reader.
We’re off work for one more day… I could really get used to this long weekend business, ya know. The house smells awesome because there’s coffee perking and pumpkin-cinnamon buns baking, outside the sun is shining, and I’ve got a whole day of glorious lounging about ahead of me. Love it.
Nice boats, FCM! I learned to drive powerboats when I was about six or so, and have taken a 15 foot boat out through the Golden Gate but haven’t had much experience with ocean sailing type boats at all–looks like fun, though. I’d like to take a Windjammer cruise in the Caribbean someday, sigh…
Okay, everybody, stop with the yummy food stuff–I’m hungry and don’t wanna mess with cooking right now so just knock it off!
Thrak is getting huge, and so beautiful! Love his markings–orange kittehs is the best!
Good luck on the new job, swampy! The answer is “SIM card.” GSM phones have 'em, other kinds don’t! Pbllth!
Nice OP, FCM. Boats are pretty. You should have fed the patronizing jerk to the sharks. There are sharks around there, right? It’s south!
Ouch, Soapy. And the recipe looks good.
We’re lazing around here. Last night was hideous for Mr. Lissar- Nat cried until he fell asleep, four hours. So we’re conserving energy until later, for dealing with the trauma.
Work was okay, except we had this extremely smelly guy in, hanging around, for about forty-five minutes. He had kids with him who were clean and okay-looking, but he had the dreads you get when you don’t shower for a couple months, and when he paid for something, his hands we three shades darker than you could tell they should be. Ick.
On the bright side, there’s a Shopsin’s General Store cookbook, which I have bought and have been obsessively reading. Anyone else know about Shopsin’s? I read the Calvin Trillin essay several years ago, and badly wanted to visit the general store/restaurant with 600 items on the menu, including Macaroni and Cheese Pancakes and Egyptian Burritos. It’s a lot of fun. I’m cooking from it tomorrow. It’s entirely about playing with food. Awesome.
Cookbook sounds intriguing, LiLi. Sorry Nat was so unhappy last night. Is When is your last shift again?
I’ve added Soapy’s recipe to the blog, since it was a success.
Did a bit more concrete prep work, went to buy patch for the spots that just need to be leveled, had lunch at Panera, and am now heading out to apply concrete and garden. I’m really unlikely to have much time for gardening next weekend, so I figure I need to get as much done today as I can.
Not feeling very motivated. Would someone kindly inform me that I can have fun if I get a few productive things done? I should really only have a couple hours of work today.
I just got off the phone with **Mr. Taters **who told me that he doesn’t want to go anywhere or doing anything this upcoming weekend. Hooray! Finally, a weekend to relax! Of course, we’ll see if something changes his mind as the weekend gets closer, but I really hope he sticks to that plan.
We have to go to a graveside service on the 25th for my aunt-in-law. She passed away a couple of weeks ago in Idaho. I guess they’re doing the graveside service somewhere around here. She didn’t really want a funeral and she wanted to be cremated. Half of her ashes were going to be interred with her husband who passed on some years ago, now; and half of her ashes were to be laid to rest next to a son of hers on some mountain top.
Anyway, we’re going because my MiL asked us to go. We knew Irene, of course, but weren’t particularly close to her. Irene was my MiL elder sister and she lived a looong life. All that’s left now is MiL. Her brother died quite a few years ago due to cancer.
Break time! SIL and I finished installing the sheetrock in the stairwell. He’s getting ready for work and when he’s gone, I’m going to mud and tape.
Some time in the next 10 days, I have to clear the studio so the furnace guy can get to the furnace for our annual check-up. There’s so much crap piled up in there, it’s impossible to penetrate the space. I need a plan - once I figure out where all the crap goes, it’ll be easy.
Step one - separate my crap from FCD’s crap from the apartment crap.
Step two - ???
Step three… well, you know the story…
I forgot I’ve got a craft show this weekend - on base. I’m almost inclined to blow it off - it was just a $25 fee and frankly, I don’t know if I can take the rejection of another bad show. Plus we’re so close to being finished here.
For now, I’m just enjoying the chance to sit and relax. And sweat. And drink some water. Good times.
Bah, FCM, I almost didn’t reply because my jealousy is probably showing. We sailboat-show skipped this year because of family type obligations. Rassin frissin family.
Beyond that, I had a kinda cool thing happen this weekend. My grandad gave me a gun, which was given to him by a family friend a few years ago, with the caveat that he pass it along to a child or grandchild who would appreciate it. Said family friend was a great guy, a WWII vet, much decorated, who retired a major general. The gun is his service weapon from the army, issued to him (coincidentally) on my birthday in the year I was born. It’s in pristine condition, and has all the accoutrments, and my grandad decided that I would probably be the most appreciative, given the birthday connection and the fact that I shoot regularly. So that was kinda cool.
Hmm… now I just need to find someone who’ll take me out on a sailboat! So if we were to come to Maryland next summer…
I bought some turkey tenderloin and cooked it up. Now I’m trying to decide whether to turn it into turkey pot pie or turkey divan for dinner. They both sound good. Decisions, decisions.
Hmmmm… I may have to check out this cookbook, LiLi. I’ll have to delay gratification, though, as I just bought the Pan Chancho cookbook on a whim a couple of weekends ago (now I can make my own BaBa Poutine at home instead of shlepping all the way to Kingston! YAY!) Also, I am running out of room to put all these cookbooks. Clearly, more bookshelves are needed. Fie on anyone who suggests less cookbooks is the better solution to this problem.
PS. Congrats on your impending freedom. Sounds like Nat is a full-time job all on his own.
Cinnamon buns have been gobbled, puttering has been completed, and last of the yardwork is done. Thinking a bike ride would be nice, since I need to pick up a few last-minute things for dinner.
I’ll post the recipe for the pumpkin buns later… they were divine.
Yeah, sounds like Nat is job enough for now. (Remind him of this when he’s older; he’ll appreciate it. )
Hi welby! Cool story about the gun (and this from a keep-those-guns-away-from-me type person)l
I gave up. I was starting to feel stressed by the amount of work left to do and the amount of time between now and tomorrow morning and took that as a sign that it was time to chill. Steps are done except for a couple of finishing touches. Hopefully they’ll look decent once they’re painted. I’ll be replacing them eventually, so I don’t want to spend lots of time and money on them just now.
So…I’m considering going to the movies or going to a bookstore or something. Off to search for something different to do.
On Sunday there were police in our neighborhood and crime lab tech and the county sherriff and the county crime lab. But we didn’t know what it was. From my coworkers today I found out that two women were tied up and assulted on Saturday night and got loose Sunday morning and called the police. Yikes! I’m going to double and triple check to make sure my doors are always locked from now on!
I don’t haveta work tomorrow. I’m going to try to break through this writer’s block and work on my thesis introduction instead of going to the Book Depository.
Last night Toy Roommate* was watching this weird Sgt. Pepper movie made in the seventies. It stars Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees as the band, George Burns as an old guy, and features the funniest cover of “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” as sung by Steve Martin. A lot of drugs went into that movie. I must see all of it.
*Toy Roommate no longer works at the toy store so I’m going to have to come up with a new name for her. I think I’ll go with Mehe Roommate.
Howdy Y’all. Quick post here cause ol’ y’all know who is on his way and I need to heat up yesterday’s casserole. Dindin is that and leftover layered sallit. Tomorrow I will do better. Cubed steak and gravy, smashed N.O.T., steamed squash and snap peas. Think I’ll cook the squash and peas tonight just to save some time tomorrow. Specially since I have an appointment for a physical right after work tomorrow.
Today I got orientated and started training. We played acronym bingo. 'Twas fun! Oh and we had “A Day In The Life Of A Customer Service Representative” also. I took my first test. I made a hunnert and one. For real. That’s what the puter told me.
