My Vacation is Great!

I’ve been on vacation since Friday. So far, it has been great!

Friday, I did absolutely nothing constructive. No yardwork, no home improvements, no surfing for porn, nothing. Well, I took my dog to the vet. I had to get him shots for kennelling, and it turns out he has an ear infection. Antibiotics were prescribed, and he’s on his way to recovery. Damn, that stuff’s expensive! I gave some thought to going to Pocono to watch qualifying for the Pennsylvania 500, but decided that the 45 minute drive would be too taxing, so I watched it on TV. Harvick started 31st.

Saturday, I dropped my dog off at the kennel, and he peed on my door as we got there. (How much to keep him??) Looked like a beautiful place, I think he’ll enjoy himself. My in-laws recommended the kennel, so I’m pretty comfortable. Came home and started cleaning the house. Since the dog is gone, we can get all the shedded fur swept up. It’ll be so nice to come home to a clean house! When my brother and I were in high school, my parents would go away and we’d, naturally, have a party. Even though we were underage, they never minded, because they always came back to a house that was much cleaner than when they left. It’s such a great feeling. Also, we got our child credit check from the government. Life is good! So is Dubya’s timing…

Sunday, we went to mass to see our niece christened, then left for vacation. We saw the Stealth Bomber flyover (for Sunday’s PA 500) from the turnpike on our way to Philadelphia, and was able to listen to it pretty much the whole trip down–on FM, even! Except for the last 25 laps… We hit Gibbstown, NJ at about 3:30, checked in (the hotel sucked ass, but that’s another story for another day…), called my wifes best friend, and arranged to meet her at Seaside Heights at around 5:30-6:00, and had a great time on the beach. The boy (Colin, 3 yrs old) was afraid of the ocean, but I was like a little kid, splashing around. My wife and her friend spent the time catching up, and Colin and I collected shells and chased seagulls. Harvick finished 12th.

Monday, we took Colin to the Philly Zoo. He was in heaven! He imitated all the animals, fed some sheep and goats, saw his crocodiles, and just enjoyed the hell out of himself. He was thrilled to watch me ride a camel, liked the peacocks just walking around unchecked, laughed hysterically at the otters swimming, got excited that a turtle looked at him, asked if I was as tall as a giraffe, and had a blast.

On Tuesday, we went back, so he could say goodbye. We saw the lions get fed, saw the otters again, and did whatever he wanted. He told us about the lemurs (Tree-Lo), the crocodiles (Crikey!), the Kangaroos (the babies are joeys), and the rest of the animals. He loves animals. The tiger was sleeping, and a little girl next to him said “That tiger’s dead!” Colin said, “He’s not dead, he’s tired. He just ate a duck.” Who knew chasing a duck took so much out of you.

Today, I got my lawn mowed, picked up my dog (he did live the place), arranged for golfing tomorrow and Friday, fixed my muffler, and relaxed.

I may never go back to work…

But what kind of world do we live in that a two day visit with old friends and getting a few chores done is such bliss?

The bliss was seeing the joy in a three year old’s eyes. When you’re a parent, you’ll understand these simple pleasures…
