Mystery Mafia -- Game Thread

People, please stop saying I claimed seer. I have claimed nothing and know zero about my role other than my affiliation, just like you.

The rules for a lone third party would undoubtedly be different, but everyone in the game knows their win condition. It would seem hugely unfair to a neutral role to start the game without a wincon. The fool usually has a “night action” that doesn’t actually do anything.

Bus Driver

We call a player who wins if they get lynched a Jester and most of us think it’s a crap role and the game designers don’t use it.

Dancecat, have you seen the clause in the rules about how we should not expect any roles that aren’t related to Night targets? The rules specifically preclude Godfathers, Millers, and vote changers, but I think Jester (and Mason) would probably fall under that as well.

This is a very good post, especially the underlined. TexCat, why did you twist the words around?

at that time of your vote that hadn’t happened. plus i have a job and really can only get on intermittently during the day. but actually i think my lynch will be a good thing. then this whole meta nonsense about someone playing one way when they are scum and another when they are town can be shitcanned. seriously, i don’t know about the folks from the other board but if you are truly that transparant you need to go back and take mafia 101 again.

what is OTT, btw?

I’m finding it really hard to follow this thread without avatars, but for now I have a slight town lead on Idle Thoughts (mostly his post in which he says (paraphrasing) “Wtf guys with all this offtopic talk, LETS BE LYNCHING SOME SCUM”). I don’t think a scum would be quite so gogogogo about it all. I have a small town lean on mykbot just for the way he’s posting, though him concentrating so much on offtopic things is bizarre and kinda freaks me out.

I have a small scum lean on SisterChapel for “innocuous posting”. Scrolling through the thread he (she?) has made a few posts but none of them really stick out, and it very much seeming like they’re trying to blend in in the background and not attract attention to themselves.

I was gonna multiquote their posts but I can’t seem to make that button work right now (fucking internet connection)

Regarding my vote on Mykbot early d1, I did it because…I wanted to. It wasn’t a serious vote, and with a massive long d1 I figured it wouldn’t mean much. That’s basically it

vote: SisterChapel

nono, do not rule out masons

in the last game there were maybe a pool or 5 or 6 people who were designated (masons). each Night they would target someone and if they hit another mason they would be able to talk, and were able to continue targetting other people in order to increase the masonry size.

There was a wolf that was a mason though, so it’s should not be immediately clearing.

Ofc, this is assuming the roles would be in the game.

I’d guess Over The Top, Peeker.

Multiquoting is done by clicking on the button with quotation marks and a plus sign. Simply click on each post that you want to have quoted in your post and then click post reply. The quoted posts will automatically be in your message window.

AFAIK, a bus driver switches the targets of two Night actions.

the concept of the results going to the target of the Night action is new to me. i’ve never heard of this. more new stuff. nice!

jester or fool, yes.

The last game had masons, so I would see no reason that mason roles (or, for that matter, jester roles) would be ruled out. All the masons started lost in the last game and had peeks to find their partner(s). Once masoned, they lost their night action (unless you were me in which case you became a seer, but I was killed n1 and never found my partner  ). A fool/jester visits a player each night for fun and futility in most setups, so I see no reason to assume that role couldn’t exist here.

We have a custom around here–if there is one in the game, and that is not clearly stated in the opening, we call the mod a douchecanoe and continue playing as though it never happened.

Over the top

I didn’t play the mystery mash, but I think we should be targeting potential scum. So many roles are better used at them than town.

Cop’s can either confirm scum or save us from a potential mislynch
Vig kills either scum/potential mislynch rather than >rand Town

Roleblock obviously better for Scum, etc.

Oh, god, someone block wikipedia on Special Ed’s computer.

Wouldn’t a scum mason just open up the masonry to NKs?

SCUM BOARD:
Wolf Mason: Oh hey, I found a mason who found another mason Yesterday; so we kill this mason tonight and that mason Tomorrow and I go hunting again.

NETA: This is because it breaks one of the two fundamental rules of basic mafia: “vote for the person most suspicious”.

The other fundamental rule is “moderator communications are always 100% truthful”, which is why we don’t usually do death millers either.

Typically around here the mod will openly call the game a “Gastard” game (long story) if they’re going to do nasty, sneaky things with the setup that could result in normal actions having stupidly bad consequences.

I already addressed this, but no.

my pony is clearly very ill, i’ll have the vet look at it.

(Meta-ish comment: but what’s the point? Clearing townies is as easy as pie for wolves, and a bit dangerous for townies (self-induced blind spots can kill later on). It’s also effort spent that is directly contrary to what a townie is supposed to be doing, which is finding people who are acting scummy and holding their feet to the fire. I get this far less than the fakepeek stuff (though more on that below).) At one point you give Ed a town lean because you agree with his reasoning, that just … argh. It hits every “don’t DO that” nerve I own.

Well. yes it was. I have doubts that that was really your objective. That “therefore he’s scum” bit, or however you phrased it, looked much more pointed. The whole thing did, really.

Did you vote him for purposes of discussion, or did you vote him because he did something that only scum would do? You gave every impression of it being the latter, despite what you’re saying now.

Silver Jan I understand even if I don’t feel like voting for it, but it’s someone else’s case. Krayz has disputed your characterization; he’s also getting a lot of votes that feel to me as much like “lynch the loud” as like “lynch the scummy” (Mahaloth’s for instance, which is as weak as it has been characterized). Your vote here in that context isn’t reassuring me much.

I’m not sure if you missed my reference to your comments on TimeLady or just failed to respond to them: you had a temp clear-or-vote thing going on that she responded to, and I wanted to see what you have to say.

er, ignore my previous question TexCat. This answer is solid imo

Role-blocker is an example whose action is detected by target; are there others? It would be nice to read of examples of the special roles in Mystery Mafia. Is there a good link? (I do NOT have the time or energy to read through a whole game.)

Anyway, your post did recommend N1 self-targeting for those who didn’t on N0, and that would be a way for Town Vigs to self-destruct, so I’ll leave my vote on you for now.
