You’re probably overthinking it. It’s just puffery. MLK is the one black person that even racists know they’re supposed to respect. So he stands for “great black guy.” And then Trump says this guy is even better!

That their ideologies don’t match doesn’t matter to Trump. They aren’t actually people to him, anyways.

(I almost said “black people aren’t people to him,” but I’d say it’s true of all people, really.)
