Then you’ve fortunately only heard one of the most bearable examples. I wouldn’t even file Drafi Deutscher under Schlager, it’s more generic pop music in my book, but of course such categorizations are fluid. ETA: Heck, his most famous song “Marmor, Stein Und Eisen Bricht” (can you spot the grammatical error?) was rather a German answer to British beat than Schlager.

Edumacate me: What (or who) counts as “pop country”? Is it different from “country pop”? What’s cringeworthy about it? Is it all cringeworthy, or just most of it, or just the very worst of it? Oh yeah. Almost forgot. Although I do love me some good bluegrass music, bad bluegrass is one of the most horrendous things mankind has ever inflicted on itself. I did a stint as a gospel station DJ for a few Sunday mornings, and I heard an awful lot of horrible, horrible stuff.
