WHERE did you find “reasonably priced”? Amazon’s basically out of them, and their third-party sellers are gouging (like $124!), and other sellers have one or two rolls left.
And some sellers are tacking large shipping costs on top of the price gouging!
As of yesterday evening, there were a couple of Amazon sellers listing six rolls for what amounted to just a bit over typical retail (and free shipping). That may have changed though. Vermont Country Store (typically overpriced, IMO) no longer lists the wafers on their site, but as of last night they were still offering other Necco products, like SkyBars.
It’s weird how I don’t like licorice in general, but the black Necco wafers are great.
Yeah, their licorice flavor is smooth and not too overpowering.
Are all brick-and-mortar retail locations wiped out at this point? Cracker Barrel used to carry stuff like this; also, Hallmark and Fresh Market stores in this area used to keep a decent supply on hand.
Necco made one of my favorite discontinued-too-soon products of the last few years. Sweethearts Mints, which were basically heart-shaped Altoids. The tin was slightly more pocket-friendly, and the mints were a little more mild and less crumbly. Damn good breath mints, and the only non-Altoid mint I’d seen that didn’t taste artificial or cloyingly sweet. Sadly they only survived on the market for a year or so.
I bought some at Dollar Tree a few days ago. Mine had quite a few.
I dare not stray from my Necco Diet (the one where I pop a Necco as I pass the open boxes of donuts and cookies that fellow teachers bring into school). So I was getting worried…
…until I found a few rolls at a Walgreen’s, which sent me on a city-wide hunting/gathering frenzy. A few here, a handful there, and I had a case of 24 by the end of the day!

But fear not, with my luck I’ll have a drawer full of them when a new buyer restarts the Necco production line. Just like when I stockpiled pallets of “real” Coke when they scrapped it in favor of New Coke…
I ordered two cases shortly after this thread popped up. (From different vendors, in case one flaked.) I’m hopeful I will soon own a lifetime supply of delicious necco wafers.
Yes, I really do like them. I admit they resemble hard, flavored chalk, but I used to eat chalk as a kid, too.
my local store had a bunch but said they were selling well lately
I’m shocked to learn that anyone thinks there are different flavors of necco wafers. They all taste like wintergreen to me. . .
Well, I just ordered $50 worth …
I saw Sky Bars at my grocery store tonight, so I decided to try one. I worried for a moment that I would discover confectionery heaven just in time for the factory to close and for it to be unattainable forever after.
I needn’t have feared. It was good, but not really better than a lot of other candy bars. Seems like you get one piece that’s your favorite (caramel for me) and three that aren’t. If Necco does go away I’ll miss them in a “remember when” kind of way, but not jonesing for my next wafer fix.
Not only are they all different flavors, they have much more interesting flavors than modern candies. They have several pleasant fruit flavors (orange, lemon, lime) and also a lot of spice flavors (clove, cinnamon, liquorice) as well as some minty flavors and of course, chocolate. It’s quite hard to find spice-flavored sweets these days without making them yourself.
Aaaand, the first case arrived. Mostly in good shape.
Yay! Hope they weren’t too expensive once you paid shipping. If Neccos are brought back from the brink of death, it’ll be because you and me were filling up our closets.
orange drywall, clove drywall, mint drywall, licorice drywall…
I paid a little over a dollar a roll, including shipping. (The big rolls, not the little Halloween ones.) Weirdly, the two companies I bought from had different prices pre-shipping, but exactly the same price including shipping.
Congrats on successful hunter/gathering!
I’ve been looking for the the perfect spot to hoard my hoard. Airtight container, dark, dry and cool (but don’t let 'em freeze).
Then I realized I’m obsessing over disks of sugar (with a rich bouquet of Cardiff chalk, and notes of illustration board and bus transfer). They’re sort of pre-aged.
I love them all, but the clove-flavored Neccos are my favorite.
Clove is my favorite, too. But I like that it’s one of many flavors, and not just an overwhelming roll of clove candies.
I grew up near Central Square too and I remember the smell. I used to see that the address on Pom Poms and other stuff too had my zip code on it.
The thing about the necco wafer is that you can rub two of them together and they create a nice feeling. I think it’s the powder on them. Go ahead and try it. No one’s watching. That’s my main memory of them anyway.
