"Never give up, never surrender!" - for Galaxy Quest fans

Previous thread: Galaxy Quest

Here are two funny, interesting behind-the-scenes articles about the 1999 sf comedy (considered by some, including me, arguably the greatest Star Trek movie ever made) that I just came across. There’s some overlap, but both are worth a read. If you only want to read one, I’d say read the first:

No joke, I heard Guillermo del Toro on the radio(NPR) and he said Galaxy Quest is one of the best movies he’d seen since he became a film-maker himself. He talked about how comedy like that is incredibly hard and it is just filled with so many funny moments and at the same time, it manages to pay homage to Star Trek without looking down on it.

Yes! Just ask the experts: Galaxy Quest - Wikipedia

There’s a marvelous documentary on Amazon Prime called “Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary” that any fan of this movie would enjoy.
I highly recommend it.

I want the R-rated version released.

“I really didn’t like Galaxy Quest” said nobody ever.

By Grabthar’s Hammer, I love this movie!

Those were great, thanks for posting them!

“Did you guys ever watch the show?”

There probably are some people who wouldn’t like it. But they’re folks who wouldn’t ever have gone to see it in the first place. So everyone who’s seen it loves it.

It’s a masterclass in comedy writing; it has a very high number of quality gags and does so over the course of a story that’s perfectly paced. Every beat is hit at precisely the right moment. The only flaw I can see in the film - which is a huge compliment, even a great movie usually has more than one flaw - is the editing and pacing of the opening sequences at the fan convention. Other than that it’s as good a comedy as has ever been made.

“It’s stupid, but I’m gonna do it.”

That was a hell of a thing

Which i say all the time. Especially when watching Monk (my wife’s addicted) and Tony Shaloub gets the spacey look that he did in Galaxy Quest.

Thanks for the tip! I watched it last night - definitely worth a look. Although I cringed at the utter nerdiness of the cosplaying GQ fans shown, well, y’know, if it makes 'em happy, God bless 'em.

The reviewer in the Dallas Morning News when it came out didn’t like it. My wife and I had seen the previews and we were excited to see it. The review came out and is was like a D or F; something really low. We said, screw it, we’re going to watch it anyway. We were right, the reviewer was wrong.

I will arrange to have him hunted down and killed.

As far as I can tell, Jay Webb only reviewed three movies in his career, saying about GQ:

Each actor plays an actor playing the sci-fi characters. It’s a bit difficult to keep track of who’s who, and ultimately the characters are so underdeveloped it’s even more difficult to care.

As best I can tell, he just slept through the movie.

Wow, the reviewer basically admitted he was an idiot.
