Today I picked up a 4-5 mo old doberman puppy. Not chipped, no one responded to the ads. The woman who found him couldn’t keep him, so I got him.
He needs a name. I’m thinking Merlin or Scout. Here’s a poor pic - you’ll have to wait until I can get him to be still long enough to take a good one. he’s the black and tan pup in the bushes… He joins my other 4 rescue Drago, Stumpy, Quinn and Frank. Hit me with your name suggestions. I like short names.

He’s very cute–I had a giant dobie once, named Buck and just the sweetest and best trained dog ever. Also super gorgeous. It occurs to me that the vet who cropped Buck’s ears had a very distinctive style to how he clipped the ear tips–if this guy’s ears are cropped might be worth posting the ear pics on Reddit, see if you can figure out who did the crop job. Just in the off chance that he was lost while travelling or stolen (happens a LOT around here, there was a corgi got dognapped just today in the local subreddit) and does have people looking for him, just not as local as you’d expect.
I would be unable to own a Doberman and not name it Duane.

So how about … Chip, a new name for when he does belatedly get chipped.
“Drago, Stumpy, Quinn, Frank and Chip” sounds like a good crew.
Since you like short names, you should call him Clyde, after one of The Doberman Gang. One of the best drive in movie series ever!

I knew a guy with a Doberman named Dobie. I always joked that the dog thought of him as Mannie.
Levi or Lenny.
I don’t know if the dogs are smart enough/able to recognize their individual names when called but something with a different sound and than the other name the dog may realize you are calling him specifically.
Now before somebody gets mad about my smart or dumb dogs comment my B-I-L had 2 dogs, Penelope and Drake If he called Penelope, Penelope would get up and come over to him and Drake would stay. If he called Drake, both Drake and Penelope would come over. I could give other examples but sorry to say but that Penelope was one dumb dog.
We have Kizzy, Loki, and Simi. They definitely recognize their names. If they are all relaxing and I call one of them, only that one responds.
Simi is currently in puppy class, obedience 1. Response to name is a huge part of basic obedience. In one exercise we stand 50 feet apart, with yummy treats. One of us calls “Simi”, who runs to get treated. Then the other calls “Simi”. Back and forth.

Oh my goodness, beautiful dog! I’m glad he’s got his ears. 
Yeah, I can’t support ear cropping any more and I’m glad it’s mostly not done. He has a very level eye to him and seems like a Srs Doggo but that could just be adjustment behavior. Call him Goose because he doesn’t seem to be much of a maverick lol.
