New "Fall" TV Shows 2021 COVID Delay Edition

After the COVID hiatus, new TV shows are starting to crop up.

Resident Alien on SyFy has its own thread. I’m enjoying it, but I’m not sure how long they can spin out the premise. Beyond Alan Tudyk is a hoot as an alien badly trying to blend into a small town, I personally don’t think it has all that much going for it.

Walker is for some reason a gritty re-boot of Walker, Texas Ranger, with Sam Win-, ahem, I mean, Jared Padalecki as an alcoholic widower with PTSD trying to re-connect with his alienated teen children. Oh, and he’s a Texas Ranger. I tried the first episode and quit part-way through. I was like half-way in, and not a single bad guy had received a spin kick to the head. What’s even the point?

Others?

This sounds like Third Rock From the Sun without Jane Curtain as the “straight man”. Pass.

The entire point of Walker, Texas Ranger was how utterly cornball it was. From Chuck Norris having the chutzpah to ‘sing’ his own theme song to how quickly you can spot which popular film they stole the plot of this week’s show from, it was pure goofy 'Nineties fun, back before The Sopranos came out and made television a serious endeavor which sucked all of the fun out of everything. Nobody wants to see “an alcoholic widower with PTSD trying to re-connect with his alienated teen children”, particularly on “The CW”, which really exists only as a route to mainline DC Arrowverse shows directly into the entertainment arteries of GenXers hoping that they’ll recreate the ‘magic’ of Lois and Clark.

I’m still missing The Americans and Justified, waiting for Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and just trying to cope with the fact that The Mandalorian is probably the last Cheyne–Stokes gasp of the cancer-ridden corpse of Star Wars. Excuse me, I’m going to rewatch The Expanse. Again.

Stranger

It’s more like “What if Mork had murdered Robin Williams and took over his body after crashing into Boulder, Colorado? With Alice Wetterlund as Mindy.” I’m enjoying it, and will stick with it for as long as it lasts.
