My wife and I brought home two new kittens from a rescue agency last night. This is a grand experiment for us, as my wife has allergies but has been taking allergy shots for over a year. We are hoping that she can breathe with “normal” cats (we already have a purebred Devon Rex, who is less allergenic than regular cats).
We’ve got a boy and a girl. We haven’t named them yet, so feel free to offer suggestions if you like. The boy is extremely friendly, lovey, curious and energetic. The girl is shier, a little more nervous, and reserved, but she likes to be held and will purr if you pet her. (He purrs if you just look at him, really).
Funny, as there is another thread on IMHO (I think) asking if animals will look at their reflections in a mirror. The consensus was not cats. We never had a cat or dog who did, so it is amazing to see her admiring herself.
Thanks for the name suggestions - still haven’t made any decisions. To answer some questions: yes, they are littermates (brother and sister, obviously). And they are about 13 weeks old.
The girl was definitely interested in the mirror and spent a while there checking herself out. The boy couldn’t care less about the mirror, but man does he love the laser pointer!
Our most recent rescued kitty did a lot of incredibly cute back-arching, tail-fluffing fighting with the kitten in the mirror, as did another kitten we had many years back. After a while they decide the kitten in the mirror is stupid and they stop playing.
My sister had a deaf cat. It would sit near a mirror and definitely noticed if anything was coming up behind it. Definitely understood mirrors.
I think a lot of animals initially react to the sight of a mirror image and then soon realize that it doesn’t smell like anything and decide to ignore it.
Your girl has a really interesting coat. Odd tabby-calico thing going on there ( unless those are patches of brown I’m seeing, rather than orange ). Regardless, really interesting.
They’re both cute as hell of course :). Good luck with the allergies.
Yeah, she’s got a very unique look - the patches are sort of orange/tan. She’s like half-tiger/half-calico.
We’re discovering that they both like getting their bellies rubbed - they flop over and present themselves to be rubbed. Very cute! I’ve got to try to get a picture of this…
