Just saw a promo for it.
Whaddya think, is there another Dat Phan out there?

Wow, that’s surprising. Season 2 tanked so badly they didn’t even air the finale. Still, I liked it, and I’ll watch a new season given the chance.
Actually, season 3 did not get to show its finale. It was a competition between the season 1 and season 2 casts.
The problem with the show is that their contestants do not have more than one set of funny stand up material. After that, they either repeat themselves or tell unfunny jokes.
I’m finding that a lot of people who do standup are risk-averse like that. I don’t get it.
If there is, I don’ think we need to find him.
That’s not true. Think of the lives we could save if we get to him in time. Sort of like a Terminator thing.
Well, winning does seem to guarantee we never hear from the guy again.
This is exciting but puzzling news. Who did end up winning the second season? Was it John? I know they eventually aired the last episode on Comedy Central, but I don’t think I ever saw it. Anyway, I hope if they do go through with a third season they actually commit to airing every episode this time.
Except on the next installment of VH-1’s “I Love the 80s”.
I’ll watch it - I liked the first two (not the third season, though). Granted, some of these comics are one-trick ponies, and I’m still not sure how they qualified (Kathleen Madigan? I think she’s hysterical, but she’s been on the comedy circuit for years - I thought it was for undiscovered talent), but for the most part, I enjoy the show.
E.
John won the second season. The second season roster, top to bottom, was much funnier than the first season, btw.
My memory of the second season is spotty. I remember the 2nd season cast destroying the 1st season cast pretty easily, but I don’t remember what happened after that.
I didn’t see the commercial, when does this start?
I don’t think there was a specific date – just “coming this summer.”
Dunno. Everybody check under their desk.
Whatever channel it’s on (I think NBC) says it’ll have a 2-hour premiere on May 30th beginning at 8pm EST then be on Tuesdays at 9pm. House will be over for the season by then, right?
I only saw parts of season 1. IIRC, their “sets” were only 5 minutes or so. If you can’t come up with more than one 5 minute set, you probably shouldn’t be doing anything but open-mike night down at the Ha-Ha Room.
I understand the need for the short sets- they have to leave plenty of room in the broadcast for the “reality TV” part of the competition- but 5 minutes only seems like a complete set if the comic really sucks balls.
I’m sure they can do more than 5 minutes, but it won’t be very good after that. It is actually quite difficult to be funny throughout the length of the show.
Your average comedians perform in front of a different audience every night. They don’t need more than 10 minutes worth of good material, which they repeat over and over again. The extremely good comedians can manage a one hour set on comedy central or occasionally on HBO. The legendary comedians get 2 hour specials on HBO. Here I’m talking about people like Chris Rock, George Carlin, Robin Williams and Jerry Seinfeld.
If the show runs at least 10 weeks, these people would have had to do 50 minutes worth of good stand up. Having that much good material is no joke.
In the clubs I’ve been to, that’s true for the opener/ middle guy (usually local comics barely above the “open-mike” level).
I’ve seen 1.5 to 2 hour live sets from guys like Carlos Mencia, Joe Rogan, Doug Stanhope, and Ron White (just a couple of weeks ago, for Ron White). Some of their stuff was recycled from previous shows/ tours, but most was fresh. Stanhope and White themselves were definitely not fresh by the end of the shows- they drink pretty heavily while performing. I wouldn’t classify any of them as “legends,” but they can all carry off a long set.
I don’t remember the exact format, but IIRC there was only two sets of stand-up each week. The two comics that performed were selected in the goofy reality TV portion of the show, packed up their stuff and those two performed at the comedy club. The winner was selected (by somebody- the club audience? the other comics?) and the loser went out to the bus to grab his/her stuff for the cab to the airport. The only way a comic would have to perform all 10 weeks is if he/she REALLY sucked at the stupid human tricks and ended up having to perform for his/her place in the house, week after week.
