New Star Trek Series coming January 2017!

Expect all new characters.

Here’s The Hollywood Reporter on it: ‘Star Trek’ TV Series in the Works – The Hollywood Reporter. Says CBS is looking for “a writer.”

Singular.

Yeesh.

I would have liked to watch the show, but I’m not paying for another streaming service just to do so. I can wait for it to be available on DVD from Netflix.

Sounds like it’s really going to suck, even worse than the movies.

I’m working my way through Enterprise on Netflix (I feel like I owe it to the franchise, but the retcon is making me gag) but I’m not paying $6 a month to watch this. CBS is shooting themselves in the foot here. Ten years is a long time, and those of us who remember way back to TOS (in syndication, but still) are not the ones they need to attract. They need to get to the young’uns who haven’t seen TNG, DS9, et al, except on BBC or SyFy. And I don’t think they’re invested enough in the franchise to pony up.

I agree but still have hope for it. I’m also working my way through the series on Netflix and listening to the Mission Log podcast. I just started season 2 of TNG.

I would imagine there will be a staff for the series. They may mean a writer for the pilot and show bible maybe?

Chatter since the initial announcement is speculating that while the pilot will premiere on CBS and then go to streaming, subsequent episodes will premiere on streaming and then air on CBS (or somewhere else) later. The point being that streaming will let you see episodes first after the pilot but not exclusively. That I could live with, although it will make on line discussions difficult.

There’s reason for hope. Alex Kurtzman is one of the brains behind the reboot of Hawaii 5-O, which I find a worthy successor to (and even an improvement on) an original that I liked a lot.

As long as they don’t rehash a Naked Time/Now ep…

I agree. Just like they did with TNG. It’ll be an entirely new cast of characters. Probably even a different alien on the bridge. So far they’ve had Vulcan and Klingon bridge officers. Maybe this time the captain will be an alien?

I do hope they retain the basic idea of a bridge crew and doctor as the recurring characters.

Star Trek has to be optimistic and project a better future. That’s what makes it Trek. If they go dark with a defeated Federation or mired in a hopeless war, than fans like me will switch it off. I don’t want to see Battlestar Galactica in Trek uniforms. :stuck_out_tongue: Trek was always at it best when the Enterprise avoids a battle. The captain used his intelligence to find a solution without fighting.

I can live with this. I’m one of the small minority who watches TV over the air. I can pick up my CBS affiliate with ease. As long as it comes on the air not long after it premieres online.

Absolutely.

Here’s an interesting National Post opinion piece on what the new series should and shouldn’t do: Breaking News, Headlines and Stories | National Post

The writer of that piece seems to think that 20th and 21st century history is really important to the canon. It isn’t. They could slightly modify the back story with no harm to the franchise. Do we really care when the Eugenics Wars were - unless they want to bring back Khan yet again, that is.

I know this probably wouldn’t happen in a million years but I think they could do an Assignment Earth show set in the present where the hero is trying to prevent the Eugenics Wars. Aliens and/or time travel would be a component. Although the Time War on Enterprise was already done.

Yeah in Star Trek the 21st century is basically a global reset with a nuclear war.

I don’t hate the movies at all, but I think it’s a big mistake not setting it in the original universe some time post Voyager.

Completely agree. I like the movies fine but there’s decades of stories and cameos to draw on in the TV Universe.

Movie universe will just have gag-inducing recasts with male models playing Picard or Q.

In fact, the Star Trek “prime” universe, that most all of the pre-Abrams stuff happened in, was already not our universe. Canonical Trek history started diverging from real history no later than 1969.

Also, it is established that the Trek prime, Mirror, and alternate/Abrams universes (and presumably ours) are iterations of a multiverse. It’s perfectly compatible with everything to have yet another version.

I don’t recall your having a beard…

Bryan Fuller being chosen to showrun this is good news. He is talented and loves Trek.
