Interesting. I wasn’t able to reach Fr. Altman to learn if he intended to refuse the Sacraments to Catholic Democrats who are committed to remaining (and voting for) Democrats. Nor was I able to reach the communications director for the Diocese of LaCrosse to learn if the bishop had any thoughts on the content of the video (that he was authorized to share).
I DID learn that the bishop of Tyler, Texas endorses Father Altman’s comments.
Does anyone know if this kind of overt politicking is common elsewhere in the Catholic regions of the world?*
*I don’t consider the fact that a Jesuit priest gave an invocation to close the DNC to be an example of overt politicking. I’m curious to know whether priests in France, Colombia, Portugal, the Philippines, and elsewhere speak from the pulpit to their congregants this way.
I’m not devoting any brain cells to watching/listening that screed. I’m just happy his church/congregation is going to start paying proper income and property taxes.
I think it’s fascinating the “Christian” claim while disavowing all of Christ’s teachings and actions. The shame, self-loathing and resignation to an eternity damned to hell must be tearing him/them apart.
If you’re going to run a dictatorship, you’re going to want to do some purges. And generally you want to offer some sort of excuse or other for the purging you’ll be doing.
“SPIES!!1!!!” is as good an excuse as any other; in fact it’s time-honored.
“Nurse! Don’t give me any of that damn Bill Gates’ vaccine!”
“Not to worry honey - this is the one made by doctors and medical researchers.”
“Oh! Well, fine then, not a problem”
The majority of the California Senate Republicans are under quarantine due to coming in contact with a member who tested positive. But that didn’t prevent the Minority Leader from attending a religious rally at the Capitol building. Without a mask.
